This is definitely pushing my areas of knowledge but if the goal is to speed up finding or locating files in the filesystem, then yes, some kind of in-memory index or smarter metadata caching would likely help. Modern filesystems already do a fair amount of that (don't ask me how they differ), and I am sure there are pros and cons to different systems. My point was narrower: once you've already opened the file, the difference between reading 10 bytes and 100 bytes is negligible. This means a "quick pre-check" doesn’t save much unless it avoids the open entirely (which does not make sense if you want to check every file). I cannot give exact figures on this and of course it varies by exact file system and storage type. -- It's impossible for someone who is at war with themselves to be at peace with you.

Then you can totally block certain types, or process them further with an antivirus tool. -- Cheers, Carlos. ES🇪🇸, EU🇪🇺;

And considering you attempted to run a computer business which failed and had so many clients who were upset with you bricking their machines that a local, in town legitimate computer repair business was giving those people a snit discount, it makes sense. And then of course just last year you were unable to repair your own Mac and had to reach out to gremlin for advice on how to repair it really closes the lid on your lack of technical skills, snit.

Dumbass, I know a lot more about that virus than you ever will. I had to relocate for awhile to avoid an encounter with the feds as a result of what a friend in the scene did when he released it. I was the person responsible for acquiring a safe place to host codebreakers.org - Yes, I can back that statement up too. You didn't pickup a newspaper one morning and find an article about you on the front page. I did. You know fuckall about it. > Since then, malware has gone from teenage pranksters to full-on criminal > enterprises using zero-days, ransomware, and attacks on everything from > routers to cloud systems. What the fuck do you mean by since then? Ignoramous, the scene was pumping out destructive code that included data theft quite sometime before Melissa got around. I was responsible for some of it myself. teenage pranksters? You think Melissa was written by a teenager?!? Dumbshit. > You acting like the modern threat landscape is > the same as 1999 is... well, let's just say that's the real happy and > ignorant mindset here. :) I'm acting like nothing of the kind. You are talking completely out of turn here though. Your knowledge of the scene is a joke on your best days. BugHunter and Malwarebytes aren't from 1999. I wrote BugHunter and was cold recruited to work for Malwarebytes where I used those skills I have to reverse engineer 0day malware samples that would pull all kinds of shady shit if left to run amock on your gear. By cold recruited, I mean they offered me a job when I wasn't even looking for one and had no idea they were hiring. My known skills and reputation caused them to do that, Michael. How many serious tech jobs have you been offered by an employer when you didn't even know they were looking to add to their ranks? none as in zero, right? stop trying to pretend as if you have any knowledge to have a discussion on malware, let alone actual viruses with me. You are in way the fuck over your head on those subjects, Michael. Carlos was essentially talking shit about viruses, he doesn't need you to try and run interference. I'm a former VXer, I know the scene far better than either of you ever will. I was part of it. In the trenches. Yes, I can backup those statements too if you'd like to me to do so? It's not as if it's a secret, Michael. It's common knowledge to those who are seriously into IT or any subset of it. I already cut David Brooks off and disclosed who I am and what I've done a few days ago - screwing him out of the chance to surprise attack me with the information. I'm not worried about being judged for my past. I regret some of the things I did, but, it is what it is and I can't exactly go back and undo it. You weren't even an outsider, and Carlos doesn't really know what the fuck he's talking about in so far as this subject is concerned. If none of the .doc files contained macros, IT was wasting clock cycles and risking mailbox corruption (yes, dumbshit, that was a thing too) by scanning for them. He didn't even mention the 'no macros' until I started probing him about it. IT was scanning them because some did contain macros and atleast one person in IT understood the risks that presented to the network - which is why they were scanned. Carlos didn't even understand that a virus scanner is only as good as it's last update and that it's mostly retro active in it's abilities to protect you from unwanted code. I took advantage of that ignorance many times back in the day myself. If your virus scanner says xx file is clean, you will trust it and you'll take a bite of the tainted cookie. You only have to take a nibble, you don't have to eat the whole thing - My code got you at the nibble. -- Liar, lawyer; mirror show me, what's the difference? Is your idea of peace attempting to bait replies from me and Steve Carroll with your bot threads in alt.computer.workshop? Or falsely accusing me of being behind an obnoxious one (if it was actually a bot in the first place) that was used to seed search engines with slimey untrue statements primarily focused on your detractors? And doubling down on it? Going so far as to completely misunderstand what I wrote and try to use that to claim I had insider knowledge? And when that didn't actually work, accuse me of lying about having insider knowledge in the first place? A claim YOU wrote - I never claimed to have any such insider knowledge in the first place. So I couldn't very well lie about something I didn't even claim to have in the first place. I've maintained from the jump that I had no copy of the bot in any form and didn't know for absolute certainly who was behind it; if it was actually a bot in the first place. Maybe you thought the AI 'psych' profiles was a peace offering or something? Even though they weren't really accurate and the AI knew that when it provided it to you? Yet you wrote more than once you thought it was accurate and you agreed with the answers it provided. You and Carroll have not only said you could best my AIM chat bot (not on AIM, of course these days) but that it was horrible. The evidence does not back that. You say you are an amazing coder. I am wondering how you reconcile these things. But if you want to let it go and just not bring up that attack against me I am happy to do that, too. Are you able to stop attacking and making up stories about me? <snip where you went into la-la land... remember, I have no taste for your nonsense attacks> -- It's impossible for someone who is at war with themselves to be at peace with you.

No, it's not. [snip further BS from you] > Are you able to stop attacking and making up stories about me? I haven't been attacking you, and, I haven't made up any stories about you. That's your thing, not mine. It's something you've been doing to people you have a self inflicted issue with going back decades. You are that dishonest. You are that much of a troll. And, as I suspected, your entire 'can you put this behind you' post yesterday was you doing what you do. You're trying to con n00bs with your BS. -- Liar, lawyer; mirror show me, what's the difference? Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent Liar, lawyer; mirror for ya', what's the difference? Otherwise the compiler produced code that was slower than the commercial program I was trying to emulate. compare string? It was a single instruction, once the buffers were loaded and the expected registers were set. I don't have access to the code, it is in an old 8086 computer with no network. I should retrieve all the files one day for archival. > >> Someone from my rough pal group left the uni and created an antivirus >> company. He struck rich.
