Let me type my search, including correcting inevitable typos, etc. and then run it instead of continually flashing the screen at me as I type. > > Now try doing it with a regular-expression search ... Why would this be a problem? "Yes, ISPF View and Edit support regular expressions."

Probably not. That didn't make them useless. As it happens, I personally disable incremental search features in vim; I dislike that particular feature immensely.

I recall I've used (on a Siemens mainframe) XEDIT on IBM's VM/CMS, but all I remember (no details) is that I liked it back these days. On the same mainframe we could also run under the VM a UTS (a Unix from Amdahl) which (of course) came with Vi as a full-screen visual editor. So I cannot see why one would think that full-screen editors would somehow not be possible. For the editing on the terminal there wasn't an allocation of the mainframe CPU(s) necessary, it was basically all handled by the peripheral devices of the mainframe architecture, IIRC. Janis

They were far more efficient for the human user, such as a bank teller or at the airport checkin desk. Even for a human programmer, they supplied full-screen editing long before vi was even a gleam in Bill Joy's eye. Really, just a precursor of the way that the current WWW works. > >Imagine trying to run a full-screen editor that way: it just wouldn’t >work. Don't need to imagine it. Burroughs full-screen editor worked just fine (albeit a page at a time). >The app really needed to be able to respond to every keystroke >in order to maintain the necessary level of interactive response. No, the terminal handles that internally. You update the full 80x24 screen in place, then transmit the entire page. Burroughs terminals even supported multiple pages. DAGS CANDE.

I violently disagree. Full screen editors provide instant response to most operations: Move the cursor around, add, delete, and change text. There's only a delay when you're done editing that screen and want to move on to something else. On a well-tuned system this is a slight delay. It just occurred to me that I'm typing this text into a mail app which is basically the same thing. I can edit all I want, and then press SEND when I'm done. Maybe it's my mainframe background, but I think having "the computer" respond instantly to every keystroke is just stupid.

More like a cut-down mainframe. Good peripheral bus though, you could plug in all kinds of goodies.

Back around 1970 at Princeton I used some 360/20s which were set up as remote job entry terminals to their 360/91 mainframe, but I can't think of anyone using a 360/30 as a satellite. Their CPUs were feeble and their strength was the peripherals, line printers and card read/punch and one or two disks or tapes. IBM was happy to sell you an 1130 mini or later Series/1 or System/7 which would do a better job as a remote system. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

For small shops a 360/30 was enough - especially after third parties started hanging additional memory on them. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. Except that mainframes (of the IBM kind, anyway) were never very good at number crunching. Their job was “business data processing” (i.e. COBOL). If you wanted to do number crunching, you got yourself a CDC machine. Now *there* was a number cruncher ...

There's a difference between "good" and "good enough". Business programs tended to be I/O-bound, so it wasn't worth spending a lot of extra bucks on CPU power - that money was better spent on a good I/O system instead. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. It had a scientific subset of the 360's instruction set, some extra interfaces for data acquisition and control, and a knob on the front that controlled floating point precision, less was faster. I don't think they sold very many of them. The IBM 1800, a 16 bit mini software compatible with the 1130, was a lot more popular and cost effective. On the other hand, there was the 360/91 which was the fastest model and had fancy out-of-order high speed floating point arithmetic. I used one in some summer programming projects. The later 360/95, 360/195, and 370/195 were the same machine reimplemented in faster logic, then IBM gave up trying to compete in mainframe scientific computing. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

Alas, the software doesn't seem to be available, or Hercules could be hacked to support it. Chicken and Egg, I guess.

PCs do not have dedicated auxiliary processors, so the CPU has to do the job. Not a big deal, really. On occasion, I've even let the CPU take over the job of the UART. (Ten interrupts per keystroke!) Mainframe channels were computers too, and collecting keystrokes or punched card bytes was delegated to those. Jeroen Belleman
