I aim for the "just above lowest tier" level :-) The mini-boxes - BMax, B-Link and friends - have a range of abilities depending on how much money you want to spend. The VERY lowest-end kind of ARE trash, however go up just one tick to "low- end laptop" level and you've got something that can be good with Linux (if not so good with Win). It's the performance gap between Win and Lin that I've been exploiting. My mini-boxes are Just Fine for everything *I* do. But, trade wars, now it's hard to get anything very good - and MEMORY/SSDs ... yikes !!! Bought my stock of stuff JUST in time. Should hold me for awhile. Just bought a lap-sized disk - a Seagate MAGNETIC disk. SSDs are now, well .... > I did an experiment one day, and noticed my HD6450 13 watt > video card, provided "no appreciable acceleration" over > a MESA driven stack. The incremental upgrades worth... nothing. There are online CPU and vid-chip RATINGS to be found. The "N"-series processors in my mini-boxes don't rate super high, but not super-BAD either. As said, with Linux you can get MUCH more relative performance - a cheap box becomes a decent box. If you're doing modern video games then, well, you had better pay out the ass for a super-box. My needs are much more mild. I think you can get mini-boxes, or COULD get mini-boxes, with up to i7 processors and kinda decent vid. DID require a noisy FAN of course. Me, I can get by fine with much less. > If you check the CPUMark numbers, you'll notice after a while, > the mini-PC makers, make two tiers. Laptops are great on airplanes. Anywhere else in the world, they're already less so. They're pretty good on couches. Decent on toilets. Useful in media-displaying rooms. But at the end of the day, nothing is going to replace the box unit of a "computer" (with monitor and keyboard, etc.). > Some computing devices, are designed to bolt to the VESA four hole pattern on the back of the monitor. Don't do that unless you know the stand for the monitor is stable and can handle that. That's how call centers arrange a PC, they bolt it to the back of the monitor. And there are different VESA patterns. On a large screen TV set, the VESA hole pattern can be twice as big as the typical computer monitor 100mmx100mm pattern. And you have to know the screw type and thread pitch, to pick up some screws for it at the hardware store. It doesn't always come with the screws to do that. The VESA pattern can be used to hold a monitor on a wall, or it can be used (with some effort) to hold a mini-PC to the back of the monitor. Some monitors have a cylindrical shaft and heavy duty mount, so they can hold up a heavy load. But the typical monitors we get in N.A. the stand is pretty flimsy. Paul

In South Korea, I believe they have some screens that are closer to 1:1 . They like a square screen if they can get one. (They also like "pencil trays" for some reason.) They did try to export one of those screens as a desktop monitor here, but the marketing plan was less than useful. I think the product could have sold, if they prepared their screenshots better. But they insisted on making screenshots that left doubt in peoples minds as to how exactly those screens worked. I hate it, when a product is ruined by bad marketing. Paul

It's getting close to twenty years old. It has a plain glass finish with no AR coating, and it can be cleaned with Windex! There aren't many monitors like it.
