You can still use if for model cars I think I forgot that model boats in the UK at least were on 40MHz But everyone has gone digital. They're good for a 100 m range under ideal conditions although the models with an external antenna rather than the printed circuit ones are better at range.

Compression plus error correction plus quadrature amplitude modulation allowed more picture to be sent over noisy channels and still look pretty much perfect, and in mots cases a lot better in terms of sharpness and color rendition. So instead of five channels, we got 105. and the same UHF space carried them all. So similar to cable and satellite transmission in terms of '100 channels of shit on the TV' Some of the lower frequencies got reassigned to DAB Of course, now we have enormous Internet bandwidth, DTB is essentially obsolescent. -- “it should be clear by now to everyone that activist environmentalism (or environmental activism) is becoming a general ideology about humans, about their freedom, about the relationship between the individual and the state, and about the manipulation of people under the guise of a 'noble' idea. Plus, for audio anyway, you can use properties of how the human brain perceives it, i. e. you can throw away actual content as we won't notice. Well, the ECC makes the sharpness and colour perfect, until it falls over completely. (Depending on your decoder, there _can_ be a range where degraded but still usable gets through, but it's a very narrow range; for most purposes/people/channels, it's fine until it suddenly collapses, usually with nasty noises too - no warning it's going to, which you got with analogue.) > > So instead of five channels, we got 105. and the same UHF space carried > them all. > > So similar to cable and satellite transmission in terms of '100 channels > of shit on the TV' :-) > > > Some of the lower frequencies got reassigned to DAB And the upper ones to fobile moans. Obviously never going to be CD quality as that has no compression, but IMO you can make it good enough that it's not audible. Sorry, I was just teasing you about your mistype ("dies" for "does"). I
ought to have learnt, from when I teased an American correspondent about
the ninth of November. (I learnt from that exchange, when Krystallnacht
was!)

It does, but it's increasingly hard to find.
Actually, the one I have is a wrinkle on PAYG: it costs me 2 pounds on
any day I use it, however many calls I make that day, nothing otherwise.
Which, when I thought about it (my main reason for having a fobile is in
case of car breakdown), actually suits me better (if I have a breakdown,
[a] I'm probably going to make several calls [b] they probably involve
lots of waiting). I have to use it every 180 days to keep the number
alive, so it costs me about 4 a year. (Vodafone, if you're interested.)
I think true PAYG may still exist, though hard to find.

It is simply a user interface that lets you send text messages with
pictures or attachements, talk, or have video calls with other people.
for zero opportunity cost if your phone has wifi to broadband...
It also has a web interface so you can do it without the mobile phone
being involved
Its hated by purists because some big corporate (M$ ?) owns it and
probably records everything you send using it. But hey, they can fill
their servers with pictures of puppies all they want AFAIAC.

I don't know when Krystallnacht was, but I do know what it was.
