If I understood what you are talking about correctly, the 4 pin analog
phone plugs can go into the 8 pin ethernet plug, cabled to go at 10Mb,
so that it connects to the 2 centre wires that are not connected to the
ethernet hardware, but to the phone hardware. Ie, the strange sorting of
the pins in the ethernet plug7socked is because the 2 centre wires were
used for the phone service. I have seen this setup actually used.
