I can safely say I've forgotten more (everything TBH) about compiling kernels than some will ever know. I do have the distinct memory of when Red Hat Linux's homegrown gcc could not compile a kernel. I switched to SuSE after that episode. It only took about 20 years before I tried anything Red Hat related again.
