Unlikely to be a levelling problem.
You can always try creating a new partition on the drive so it doesn't use 
bits of it.

I would be more worried about constantly plugging and unplugging the cable 
to do the download.
Just how many insertions is the socket on the camera rated for?

The Nikon D80 will work in tethered mode IIRC so I would do that if its easy 
(say studio shoots of products for ebay), then you don't need a memory card.
