My colleague! Who then left and thus I ended up doing the swearing.

Remember, it's easy to say with hindsight, but back in 2001-2 it looked 
like a pretty decent new idea when the alternative was ext2!

Did I - in that case, my apologies. I though were were talking about 
only kernel upgrades putting booting at risk?
