I have done it - and as you say, CTRL-ALT-F5/6/7 to switch between them.

Unfortunately it was a while (years) ago and I forgot how - the exactly 
semantics are  a bit distro dependent.

However, it is possible, and it can be done cleanly and it makes a super 
way to share a computer if 2-3 people regularly use it.
