VNC uses the Remote Frame Buffer protocol. And there are open source
programs for Linux. Like vncviewer and also a server part.

But that only allows one program to start. Although this one program can
be "gnome-session" for example. So you get an almost complete Gnome
desktop on your remote machine.

Still it might be the fastest method available.
