I use leafnode as a leaf server and that is ver easy to set up.
Just enter into the config file:

> server = news.eternal-september.org
> username = xxxxx
> password = xxxxx

Then you it fetch news periodically in the background (e.g. with crontab
or systemd)

and tell gnus to use the local server:

> (setopt gnus-select-method '(nntp "my.local.box"))
