GNOME is a desktop environment, and desktop environments usually include a window manager, albeit not always. GNOME has already come with many different window managers over the years, from Enlightenment — which nowadays is a complete desktop environment in its own right — over Sawfish to Mutter, and whatever else they fancy. A desktop environment is a complete and more integrated environment, with a whole set of applications that share the same look & feel. A window manager is much more rudimentary and doesn't concern itself with whatever applications the user might be interested in. It simply allows for — as the name says — window management: window decorations with window operations buttons, window placement, movement, resizing, and switching between open windows. Some include a panel with a task bar of some sorts, but not all do, and most have some sort of menu that can be invoked by clicking on a panel button or right-clicking on the desktop background. -- With respect, = Aragorn =
