I am looking for a driver that will run the Lexmark Z2390 printer Under kubuntu 14.04

If all functions are not available, then that is not crucial

Any suggestions

I would suggest to read the specifications carefully when buying a 
printer. Pay special attention to supported standard printing languages 
like PostScript or PCL. If the specifications lacks any listing of such 
standard printing languages and instead lists a limited number of 
supported operating systems it probably means that a special driver from 
the printer manufacturer is needed and that driver is only available for 
a limited number of operating systems.

It is much easier to buy hardware that works fine with Linux than trying 
to get unsupported hardware to work. However, if you still want to stick 
to your current printer you should probably ask Lexmark to provide their 
special driver also for Linux.

Looking closer to Lexmark website it seems as if they do provide Linux 
drivers even though Linux is not listed among supported operating 
systems. As (k)ubuntu is based on ubuntu which is based on Debian I would 
first try their latest driver for ubuntu (10.10) and then try their 
latest driver for Debian (6.0) from

Brother and HP are the ways to go.  Both have great Linux support and use 
PostScript and PCL languages.  I do not know why people buy Lexmark, 
Canon and others, guess they are the ones on sale at Best Buy!

    My last HP printer was pretty cheap. I guess it wasn't the cheapest
possible but the difference between that and a similar Canon was only
10 bux. Not enough money to lose sleep over...

heh...  My primary printer is the HP LJ III that I bought for $1,872.50 
(in 1990 dollars!).  I believe I've gotten my money's worth.  Sometime 
around 1999 I bought an HP LJ 4P for $15 that I found at a second-hand 
store.  It worked great, and still works great.

I got a used HP 4P for $15 in 2003 or so, at a Rotary Club "garage sale".
It had a low page count, not enough to account for using up the original
cartridge, so I assume someone put the refill in before sending it off. 
The side panel for access to the memory expansion was missing, but that 
might have fallen off on the way home, I didn't notice until I got home. 
I have no idea why it was given away to the Rotary Club.

But yes, it just keeps on working. I see cheap more recent laser printers 
on the sidewalk waiting for the garbage trucks, but I have no need, the 4P 
is fine.

I tried an inkjet printer in 2001, around the time I moved to Linux, and 
was disappointed, the refill didnt' last long, and the ink smeared when it 
got wet.

I agree but for an advanced poster or photo quality inkjet, that might
not be an option.  All those printers have customized color settings,
and more, which makes it even MORE important to know that either the
manufacturer or the community support the print.

I found for example, to my astonishment, that all the high end HP color
artist and magazine, photograph, poster quality level printers are not
supported by Linux or Cups.  But Epson is.  That would be just to the
opposite of what I would expect.

I did try the Lexmark site and their latests UBUNTU driver, it would not install. The Debian 6 driver is the same recommended driver.

People have told me that it would not install because it is too old.

Hence, I am looking for any alternative that might run the printer, even if some functions are absent.

Most likely it will be hard to convince Lexmark to produce a driver 
usable on a modern OS installation. They would probably prefer to sell a 
new printer instead.

Maybe it would be possible to make the old driver work with an older 
Linux distribution running in some virtual machine like qemu or 
virtualbox. Such an installation on a virtual machine could be configured 
to share the printer in the network making it useful also from the host 
machine or other machines on the network.

If you follow the directions I offered, it will install.
I test installed the finished deb package on Aptosid doing 
so in the manner I suggested in the other post in this thread.

From user terminal, run commands as follows:

cd /tmp
wget -c http://downloads.lexmark.com/downloads/cpd/lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.zip

When wget completes downloading file, run:
unzip /tmp/lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.zip

After unzip completes, run:
sudo ./lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh

Click "Next" button,
Click "Next" button again.
Select "I agree to this license agreement" then "Next" button.

When the window comes up that says, "The installer has detected the 
operating system does not meet CUPS minimum version requirements. 
Please install CUPS version 1.2 or higher and run the installer again."

DO NOT click OK, just leave it for now, 
and open another terminal and run below commands:

sudo -i (or sudo /bin/bash)
rsync -av /tmp/selfgz*/pkg/files/lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb /tmp
cd /tmp
ar x lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb control.tar.gz
tar zxvf control.tar.gz
gedit control (note: substitute gedit for editor of your choice)

Once file is open in your prefered text editor, 
paste below lines over all existing contents (including empty lines) 
in file, then save file.

<start copy at beginning of next line>
Package: lexmark-inkjet-08-driver
Version: 1.0-1
Section: non-free
Priority: optional
Architecture: i386
Installed-Size:
Maintainer: build <build@linux>
Description: Lexmark Z2300/X2600 Drivers Package
<end copy at aboce line>

Then, add the files back to control.tar.gz
tar cfz control.tar.gz ./control ./postinst ./prerm ./preinst 

Add control.tar.gz back to the deb file:
ar r lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb control.tar.gz

And finally, install the deb package
dpkg --install lexmark-inkjet-08-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb

Now click on "OK" in window that says,
"The installer has detected the 
operating system does not meet CUPS minimum version requirements. 
Please install CUPS version 1.2 or higher 
and run the installer again."

It will cleanup and close itself out.
Close terms.

Most printers (actually all I am familiar with) with support for both MS 
and MAC support some form of PCL or Postscript either natively or with a 
built in emulator. I would recommend going to Lexmark tech support and 
ask which printer languages it supports. If they do PCL (most likely) ask 
which version. It's then a simple matter to pick the proper driver from 
the install list.
