Hi everybody,
I'm looking for a Linux-supported *standalone* scanner (with "Linux-supported" I mean availability of an open-source driver). Does anyone have a piece of advice for me?

What sort of scanner?  Film? slides? flat-bed?  
What do you mean by "standalone"?

I've installed and briefly used a Epson Perfection V500 Photo flatbed scanner. 

I have used it to scan a few paper photos, and a single text document, just to
test it. It is fairly fast to start, and AFAIR the low res document scan was
quick. The output quality is good. I'm uncertain if digital ICE works with the
linux driver, but I've heard people complain about that feature, so maybe you
shouldn't care either way? There is not document feeder, but the fewer moving
parts the better.

There is a small caveat, Epson only provides proprietary binary linux drivers
for the device, and there are no open source driver available AFAIK. The
binary drivers are available in rpm and deb packaging, so while the installation
wasn't plug and play it's still very easy. The worry obviously is that Epson
wont maintain those drivers for ever. The question is if any other vendor in
the consumer market is better?

The device isn't overly expensive. At this time it seems to have been replaced
by the V550 or V600. Haven't tested those.

If anyone else is aware of other flatbed scanner vendors that offers open
source drivers, or binary for that part, it would be fun to see a post. Surely
Epson cannot be the only vendor of modern devices that are usable under linux?

   I bought the random cheapest thing that was available from the corner store.

   It's a HP photosmart 4200 all-in-one.

   Not exactly a "work" scanner. Dunno if it's suitable for the OP.

Thanks Henrik, I was already aware of this resource but, as I said, I'm looking for an "advice", not a compatibility list (which of course is very useful, but includes a lot of out-of-market devices). 

I would like to receive a recommendation from someone who recently bought a scanner and tested it on a modern distro.

I'm using a Microtek "Scanmaker II" -- legal-size, 300dpi, 3-pass,
SCSI-1.  I got it about 15 years ago, and it was used then.  It uses
the SANE "Microtek2" driver IIRC.  The output is OK but _man_ does it
take a while to get there.
