#1243 — Acer LCD flat screen

My last CRT went up in smoke.  No mistaking the smoke roiling outta the
back.  Turned it off.  Been expecting it fer mos.

So, gonna finally spend my hard earned SS on a new flat panel.  My remote
Walmart has two in stock.  What appears to be an HP WLED fer $300+ (fergit
it!) and a $170 Acer 23" LCD, M/N S23?WHL (I think).  My question is, will
the Acer work with my slack 13.37.

Turns out it's an Acer S230HL and the card/chip is a:
NV5M64 RIVA TNT2 MODEL 64 / MODEL 64 PRO

Will this old of a card drive this new of a monitor?

The Riva TNT2 only has VGA output and the maximum resolution
appears to be (from a cursory web search) 1280 x 1024.

Your nice new shiny monitor should support this resolution
(because it is a standard one) but the quality of the picture
is not going to be optimal because it is not the native
1920x1080 resolution and the connection will be VGA (analog)
not DVI (digital).

One step at a time.  The spec sheet shows it has a vga connector, so I'll
get the monitor first.  Then, probly ugrade whole m/b or box, if I can find
one free/cheap.  Like my slack box, I'm old and outdated!  Besides, I can't
see fer dammit and 23" at any res will be a step up.  ;)

My 19" monitor, at 1280x1024, displayed everything on the screen 
slightly larger than my 23" 1920x1080 monitor does.

There is a lot to be said for 1280x1024 monitors.  I use 1920x1080 (would 
like 1920x1200) for grapics, and 1280x1024 on my general internet machine.  
Wanna read the news on the net, go for the 1280x1024.  Too much wasted real 
estate on the larger, wider monitors...
