I rebooted my wife's Debian Squeeze desktop without disturbing the
system otherwise. When the machine came up, wicd tells me there is no
netork connection. The wifi modem works for three laptops here (Mac,
Windows, Debian).

My wife's desktop has no network manager installed except wicd.
Unfortunately, I did not think to install lshw or rfkill packages for
her system. Running Ethernet Cat5 is impractical.

  ...

Even if there was a problem getting the network connection up, wouldn't
the card's HWadd be seen? Does the void address simply mean the
wireless card (Rosewill RNX_W300X) is busted?

To check if the problem is something in your installation you could
try booting from a live CD and see if it persists.

In situations where wireless does not work and cabling is impractical,
powerline ethernet adapters can frequently be a good solution.

Good idea. Neither Ubuntu CD nor DebianLive key are booting this
machine, so for the time being that's out. The Ubuntu boot had trouble
finding graphics drivers and so put me into VGA (?) and then hung when
it couldn't find the files needed to complete booting. Strange.

I've not thought about powerline adapters for ten years and had
forgotten their existence. I'm probably best off resolving the wifi
issue because I live in a building with over a hundred apartments, and
that could affect bandwidth.
