anyone done this yet?  if so, what controller card did you purchase with 
your system?

Assuming your mobo is SATA-II you don't need a controller card,
just an adapter cord

As far the the OS is concerned there is no difference between internal 
and external.


I have one but noticed that the external drive is not necessarily hot 
pluggable.

possibly, it's an old Dell Power Edge 1900 and I haven't looked inside in
5 years or so.........

it says this is there:

02:0e.0 RAID bus controller: Dell PowerEdge Expandable RAID controller 5

/dev/sda1       461G   11G  428G   3% /
/dev/sdb1       458G   51G  385G  12% /var/www

I pretty sure these are the only 2 internal disks.........and
the Dell support won't talk to me w/o $$

I really need to add a couple of 2-3 TB disks on this system and am 
looking for a reasonable solution.

Ok, so it may not even have SATA headers on the mobo
(or if so, would not be SATA-II)


As far as getting a controller it should not be terribly critical other 
than to get PCI rather than PCIe...since it's an older mobo which I 
assume is PCI only

Boy, did forget this box....it's got 4 500gig disks in raid 0, so
effectively only 2 drives.

Guess I will need another SATA II controller card & an external
enclosure with  a 2-4TB drive.

suggestions?
