#2098 — cd will not eject

This has been going on for years and it does infuriate me.

The procedure is this. 
I pop a new distro dvd into the drive and reboot. I get as far as the 
partitioning process and decide to continue another time.
So I try the eject button to no avail, then I reboot and attempt eject the 
disk. But the boot process runs straight through to the install disk again 
and it wont eject.

I have experienced this for years; am I the only one?
On some occasions I have damn near kicked the box across the room.

Why does eject not eject?

Power the box down, push pin through the tiny hole in the face plate, press
to open, remove CD, close door, power up.

Those optical drives have a function to lock the tray. Linux sometimes 
does that unnecessarily.. not sure why... looks like it stayed during 
boot process. If you can get to a console, try the eject command. But it 
might not work with root filesystem mounted from that disk. It is likely 
distribution specific. AFAIR knoppix defaulted to eject the disk after a 
shutdown.

Because the CD is mounted and "in use".

You can generally eject during the bios post, though you have to be quick
as sometimes the post will reload the drive. At worst hit Del or whatever
to enter bios setup so you have time to hit eject and get the disk out.

Mounted CDs won't eject; you must unmount them first.

As for rebooting, you're probably waiting too long before trying
to eject the disc.  You should be able to eject it if you press
the button before the BIOS tries to access the drive.

Thanks to all.

I though powering down and rebooting would unlock the drive. Button timing 
and rate would be important because the button opens and closes tray.

I have also been caught with the tray closing on the half lifted disk.

Some years ago I had a tray open with the disk spinning flat out, that was 
fun.

All in all it's annoying

Sometimes, it's just a screwed up drive.  I have a CD player like
that.  Button no work.  Command no work.  The DVD player works fine, as does the USB CD/DVD drive.  I
gotta do the pin-thru-the-hole-trick, but otherwise nothing will open
it.  EXCEPT!! ...when I'm installing a new distro from multiple CDs.
When one CD is finished, the drive will open to insert next CD!!  ???
That's the only time.  Go figure.  ;)

You may in your case be able to use a term to eject
while in a GNU/Linux OS:
eject /dev/sr0 
eject /dev/sr1
eject /dev/sr2
and etc.
For which ever device your problem optical drive actually is.

eject -v will tell which one it isn't (the other one), then jes add
<name>.  I did:

eject -v /dev/sr0
eject: device name is `/dev/sr0'
eject: expanded name is `/dev/sr0'

Have you tried /dev/cdrom?  Most distros I've used have a link
from /dev/cdrom to the actual CD-ROM's device entry.  It makes
life a little easier, especially when moving from machine to machine.
