In those cases you might have to upgrade your kernel or parts of it.
Some "drivers" can be rebuilt in isolation and are distributed as such.
The modular nature of the kernel allows this. It also allows for proprietary
drivers that exist for some devices but are relatively uncommon. Even these quite
often are managed by the package manager in your distribution.
