Is there a reason why you gave that one as an example, chipset,
manufacturer or was it simply an inexpensive board with useful specs?
Reason I ask is that one is not available in the UK from a quick search
and switching the newegg site to UK gives me a message what it can no
longer find that product.

I've not noticed a problem with speed with the SSD, more with the data
on the WD reds.  So as you say SATA II or SATA III unlikely to make a
difference with these drives.  However, as they are at RAID1 they will
both likely to be communicating at the same time.  Therefore I wonder
whether the SATA chipset might saturate?  If so is it worth it getting
an add on controller similar to the one you gave as an example so that I
can either put the SSD system disk on one and the WD Reds on the other,
or split the WD reds across the two controllers?  However, if that
achieves nothing then I don't need to try.

If I can speed up the system SSD that is something that might be worth
while, if the price is right, but the mechanical drives appear to be the
priority.
