This sentence no verb.

How is the _need_ to reverse engineer a feature?
What is the actual problem you're trying to solve?

Except for the reverse engineering, the best fit would be a development
board for a USB microcontroller.  This would mean that you'd also have
to write the device's firmware.  Is this what you'd want to do?

All interesting devices already have a Linux driver ...
