sound card wave-in ?

I've installed Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 on Debian Squeeze to run
under wine 1.2.3. I have a Koss headset mike plugged into a Creative
Labs X-Fi card optical/mike jack (at moment its output goes to speakers
rather than the headphones). In alsamixer, Master capture is set to 82
and mic capture set to 81 level. Sound into the mike does come out of
the speakers.

However, NaturallySpeaking fails to start because it "Cannot find
multimedia device". It suggests the problem may be selection of default
recording device, mike is plugged into the wrong jack, DNS may not
recognize the mike.

These suggests not clear to me. Is "multimedia device" the sound card or
the mike? I'm not used to a desktop environment, but the System,
Preferences, Sound, Capture shows both master and mic are muted. In
alsamixer, capture, there is no mute option. I don't know how to get
"DNS" to recognize the mike if DNS does not start.
