Not a scratched disk because I play dozens of disks and they work on
another player. These are ordinary commercial CD audio disks. Never
occurred to me it could be a hardware problem. The audio card is
supposed to work well with my Debian Wheezy system. To shutdown my
machine to swap out the drive could be done but would be painful (I'm in
the middle of pressing work).

Yes I did originally, but I was told they could be ignored. I get many
dozen of these:

This seems an illegal sense mode because of disk security and I suppose
is driver rather than hardware related. In any case, does not correlate
with sound problems. I now insert disk, open alsaplayer, and click play
button to list the tracks and start playing a disk, and it leaves no
more of these lines in dmesg. 

I try this:

  $ cdplay -v -d /dev/sr0
  Playing from track 1 to 13

After this return cdplay exists and there's no sound out. I don't
know that I should expect sound out. I put the disk into an external USB
CD drive, and it is assigned a sr1 interface. I get same result with
cdplay: 

  $ alsaplayer -i /dev/sr1
  Failed to load interface /dev/sr1

I had delayed sending this message because this morning, about seven
hours and as many CDs ago, I did not have any a problem. But now,
without my having done anything or waited long, I insert a new CD, and
the alsaplayer does not go to beginning track, and nothing is played,
although in a few minutes it goes to the beginning and occasionally
moves a bit, but no sound. I check for error messages and dmesg and find
nothing. I close alsaplayer, and when I click again Play CD, it works as
it should.
