Google "ami bios 4tb drive" without the quotes.  There are "issues" with
4TB drives especially especially since you wrote:

which implies the system is old.

Without the motherboard information you're going to be spinning your
wheels.  Since you have to open the system to plug in/out the SATA
connectors you should LOOK at the mobo for its name and model.  If
you cannot do that, boot up only the Debian distro and run dmidecode
to get the motherboard name and model per the URLs Google returns
using this query:

    debian identify system motherboard

If you're unable to do that, feed your system's manufacturer and
model number into Google per:

    <manufacturer> <model> service manual filetype:pdf

I have always been able to get motherboard info, service manuals,
date sheets, product bulletins, etc for ANY system using the above
techniques but, to be fair, those systems were NOT from Gateway
and were Dell, HP/Compaq, and others.  This might help:
