There are also stand-alone utilities. You are too ingrained in the 'DozeWorld. -- Well, anyway, I was reading this James Bond book, and right away I realized that like most books, it had too many words. The plot was the same one that all James Bond books have: An evil person tries to blow up the world, but James Bond kills him and his henchmen and makes love to several attractive women. There, that's it: 24 words. But the guy who wrote the book took *thousands* of words to say it. Or consider "The Brothers Karamazov", by the famous Russian alcoholic Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It's about these two brothers who kill their father. Or maybe only one of them kills the father. It's impossible to tell because what they mostly do is talk for nearly a thousand pages. If all Russians talk as much as the Karamazovs did, I don't see how they found time to become a major world power. I'm told that Dostoyevsky wrote "The Brothers Karamazov" to raise the question of whether there is a God. So why didn't he just come right out and say: "Is there a God? It sure beats the heck out of me." Other famous works could easily have been summarized in a few words: * "Moby Dick" -- Don't mess around with large whales because they symbolize nature and will kill you. * "A Tale of Two Cities" -- French people are crazy. -- Dave Barry

Nobody messes around with images of audio CDs either. >> the command line for server applications and security but not for the >> entertainment... > > Heh, I would bet a GUI file manager would mount it for your > feckless self. It's been pulled off the original media but then kept in a format that pretty much no one would want to use. Once you've gotten something off of a DVD or BD, why bother with treating it like physical media when you can have the full "iTunes style" experience? I didn't do that 10 years ago. Why would anyone do it today?

I doubt that. I was using xine to handle ISO files 10 years ago. Not that
I bother with that sort of thing anymore.
I abandoned complete DVD images a long time ago. It really defeats the
point of getting rid of the original media if you are going to keep putting
up with the bother of the original menus.
Then there's the wasted space aspect, and more modern devices being
fixated on h264, and I'm not even sure that mobile devices could handle
either variation on trying to preserve unique snowflake of a UI that is
the DVD/BD menu.

I expect a bit more out of the media I assimilate...

I like the classical menus and chapters (and extras) in the backups of movie DVDs on my harddisk. h264 cannot incorporate that... Another area where KDE excels Gnome is digital photography: digiKam (KDE) is far superior to shotwell (Gnome) What a putz that Gnome and "Ubuntu DE" be ;-)

I tried Evolution back in 2013. It's based on Novell Groupwise, so it _should be_ a terrific application. However, I constantly had troubles with it asking me every few minutes for a password. Sometimes it would let me download all the e-mails, sometimes it wouldn't. Very unreliable for me. Last year I discovered Geary, which works just great with my Yahoo! Mail and GMail accounts.

The text translator is also a joke in Gnome, the junkies cannot get it right: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/593/text-translator/ I'm moving to KDE, if only for the translation support: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=110491
