This is a LINUX group. There's no room for Apple fops.

Sure it is ;)

As a member of the 'dot advocacy' category this is a troll
net, if you want serious Linux discussion go to one of the
groups this group was designed to protect. But you don't,
and they don't want you, which is why you do the bulk of
your whining here.

The gang in alt.os.linux would rip him to shreds.

They probably already have.

Why the OCD about this image anyway? It's an easily readable
diagram. I've seen worse. It's not like you're going to frame
it and hang it over the fireplace. You should have seen my
hand-drawn serpentine belt schematic that I took out to the
car the other day when I had to change my alternator.

My question isn't about that one diagram. It's about cleaning up all
the pages of a big pdf.

Did it run when you put it back together?

I tried to fix my busted timing chain(s) last year.

https://imgur.com/a/LculQnw

Big waste of time. In the end I paid to have a used engine installed.

That model-year Explorer has 4 timing chains, and to fix the rear one
you literally have to remove the engine.

The perils of over-engineering...

Runs fine. But with that transverse engine, it's a real bitch to put
the belt on. You can't see what you're doing, so you have to feel for
the pulleys, keeping a mental image of the routing. And one or more
keep falling off while you're doing it, so it's over and over until
you get lucky. Then you have to hold it just right while you lean on a
breaker bar for the tensioner, unless you have three hands, which I don't.
What should have been a 15 minute job ended up taking two hours.

LOL! I know that feeling. Try using the ol' string trick to tension with.

Is that looping a cord or something through the belt and pulling it on?
I used a big-ass screwdriver and pried it on.

If all the pages are the same then:

convert -gravity SouthEast -crop 95%x97% original.jpg fixed.jpg

Also, why is this a JPEG image and not a PNG? JPEG is NOT the
proper format for this kind of image.

You got da code. Now you can run it and show *me* the results.

Thanks, but everyone keeps missing the 'clean stray marks' part.

That's those little clumps of black pixels all over the page.

Given the fact that those could probably show at any place or position, they
would require manual intervention. And since there are illustrations on the
pages, there is exactly no chance for any automated process to be able to
determine what is and what isn't a "little clump".

Ordinarily, one would use a median filer to remove such "outliers"
but in this case, the "noise" has the same characteristics as the
signal.

The very best that can be done simply and programmatically is
to use the ImageMagick morphology operator with an appropriate
kernel:

convert -morphology Dilate Diamond:1 input-image output-image

This will ALMOST eliminate the stray marks but it will degrade
the content as well.

It is certainly possible to develop a method to remove only those
stray marks but the effort would not be worth it. It would involve,
for example, setting up a neural network to recognize isolated pixels
and then fill those with the background.
