I don't know System Mechanic itself as software but if it cleans the registry, I'd recommend against it at this point. I've always cleaned but have now realized that it ends up causing more issues than it solves. However, if the NVIDIA chip being disabled seems to solve the problem, I can't help but assume that the chip itself is defective; their drivers are usually excellent. On the other hand, if it's a laptop, chances are that she's not getting a driver directly from NVIDIA but from the manufacturer instead and the driver itself is likely terribly outdated. If that's the case, laptopvideo2go.com will provide her with a newer driver which might remedy the issue. >Now the desktop (which had been steady) decides to join into the act. Heh. Funny enough, I recently had an issue which required me to reset Windows. The operating system kept informing me that an important update was waiting to be installed but it refused to actually install it. I cleaned all of the usual suspects and still couldn't get it to work. It's shite like that which reminds me that such problems are probably all too common and that most Windows users are probably tempted to just buy a new computer when they encounter them rather than try to fix anything. I can't say that Linux is always better, but I've yet to see Linux refuse to install an update without at least providing a clear reason as to why it was being such a brat.

The only problem I've ever had with Linux updating is when the respository server is down for whatever reason. Once the server comes back up the problem is solved. Meanwhile my Linux computer continues working with the older version of the software. It doesn't hose up my applications like Windows does. -- The more I see of Windows, the more I like Linux.

That's true. I couldn't care less about converting somebody to Linux. The kind of advocacy I come here for is advocacy directed at Linux users in support of tools we might not be aware of or experienced with.

And you do, of course realize that it isn't impossible for Jesus Christ to be doing this, or encouraging those who are. Android runs on the LibreOffice kernel. So yeah, LibreOffice is mobile. LibreOffice is a super computer. LibreOffice is a server. LibreOffice is a desktop. LibreOffice is growing in market share. It's good to have choices. Its "lack of popularity" is probably a good thing since it allows the developers to do whatever's best rather than whatever the user thinks that he wants. I'm one of those people who believes that the public should adopt to the software and not the other way around, mostly because the public can't figure anything out... not even their own gender. >>It's all about raising >>awareness and giving people options, especially if they've been >>alienated by Apple and Microsoft's way of doing things. > >For a market as large and diverse as "desktop PC users", two choices >are not *near* enough. > >For some people, the "big two" offerings are *far* from optimal. > >It's not always easy to leaves the herd(s), but GNU/Linux is a viable >choice, for those who are motivated and informed (and don't-much need >the commercial apps). The fact that Linux offers proper encryption out of the box and doesn't demand extra money for the feature is a selling point on its own. It also enhances the life of a machine and its attached hardware in addition to providing stellar security. In the end, the fact that it's free is almost miraculous since there is no reason to believe that it wouldn't be insanely profitable if its developers decided to charge for it.

Of course. Some time ago I did work on and showed some Ruby for the front end which is the only thing you can do when trying to avoid Melzzzzz's narcissistic crap while reading with Google Groups. Melzzzzz is regularly seen insisting "THERE IS NO" when it comes to text on Rhonda January Bass's post where info is easy to find... but Melzzzzz is just too halfwitted and/or lost to interpret any info he reads... or he does not recognize it *as* info even when he does find it. You never take blame for your own comments. Words that are easily quoted. Unfortunately there are too many "works for me" false "advocates" and not enough old school users with a clue enough to help the people with old computers. So, yeah, I buy into my own fiction, fully knowing Melzzzzz has been fooled, because it makes me reconsider my program, improving it. -- Puppy Videos! https://youtu.be/OffkiSAsYo8 Jonas Eklundh Communication

The military, to cite just one example, is not ruled by the "almighty buck." The military is ruled by specifications and standards and cost is only a secondary concern. (That's why military surplus items, if any can be found, are of much better quality that ordinary consumer goods.) Similarly, GNU/Linux and open source software are ruled by specifications and standards. In fact, FOSS is so immune from concerns of "return on Investment" that its quality is ALWAYS superior to the commercial junk that is pushed out the door.

Oh, so you're trying to claim that cost isn't in the military's dictionary? <https://www.dau.mil/glossary/pages/1673.aspx> Oops! And to hammer this home, here's some more reading for you on this subject: <http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a487933.pdf> > Similarly, GNU/Linux and open source software are ruled by > specifications and standards. Maybe by blind luck, but certainly not by planning & management controls. Especially if you're to achieve equivalence to CMMI-DEV Maturity Level 5. In any event, it is false to claim that FOSS is immune to ROI considerations, because even if there's no expression of value as money, that doesn't mean that there's no expression of value. Even a volunteer needs to eat, so he doesn't have unlimited free time to contribute to a FOSS project. -hh
