No, but I can still believe this one, as the "ONLY" indicator, which is the way you're using it, makes no more sense than the amount that actually was paid *as* a percentage. If the richest 20% pay 87% of all income taxes (see article) I can see why they would use the number as a 'better' indicator of 'fairness' than a "rate". YMDV as pitted against "TI". > > (IOW, when considering who paid the lion's share of income taxes)? > > That metric isn't normalized. I realize, but the number is so big it, in all likelihood, blows any argument out of the water. That should have been 'will pay' and I found the article: "Roughly one million households in the top 1% will pay for 43% of income tax, up from 38% in 2017." <https://www.wsj.com/articles/top-20-of-americans-will-pay-87-of-income-tax-1523007001> > > it's now somewhere near > > 44% or some such. Rich people make investments, news at 11! I didn't write it, I said I read it... months ago, actually, and I'm surprised I even recalled the figure as closely as I did. The article also noted: "To be sure, this analysis doesn’t include the flow-through effects of corporate-tax cuts, which benefit higher earners more than lower earners, or the doubling of the estate-tax exemption to about $11.2 million per person. With the capper: "Neither levy is part of the individual income tax." My take is we could use AOC's 70% and it *still* wouldn't make much of a dent before those "rich" left the U.S. As we all know, things work *so* much better when no one invests in anything ;)

Then go use more variables to make it a better assessment. For example, we know that service based and VATs are functionally regressive and change the narrative of the also easy-to-measure "richest X% pay Y%' narrative. > If the richest 20% pay 87% of all income taxes (see article) I can > see why they would use the number as a 'better' indicator > of 'fairness' than a "rate". YMDV as pitted against "TI". This metic obscures that the richest also make more of the total nationwide income than merely what a quintile appears to represent. For example, the top 1% pay 22% of the 87% your article crows about ... and also do note that the income of the Top Quintile reaches all the way down to $112K. If one really wants insight it requires examining all relevant expenses being paid, which is where we get into all of the unavoidable non-income taxes which are largely hidden in service fees and VATs which versus income are functionally regressive. For but one example, gasoline taxes. Anyone who has a car pays them and at an average of 15K miles/yr at 25mpg, the Government taxes add up to be roughly $0.60/mile nationwide, which means a hidden consumption tax of ~$360/yr. While this may not sound like a lot, for a median household (~$55K), $360 is an increase in their real total tax rate of +0.65%, whereas for the 1%er, the same $360 is no more than a +0.1% increase. Repeat with the other Federal & State taxes & fees hidden in utility bills, etc. and the net result is that the population who pays "No" Federal Income Tax is actually paying out a decent percentage of their income though all of these. -hh

Anyway, it does not matter because the FROM line on a post does not matter, it's the content that counts. That's what Klaus Schadenfreude does when he gets caught. I don't disagree that certain taxes are hidden and that the amount they eat into a paycheck can be a sizable percentage, I'm merely saying that using one metric like that makes no sense. One can't compensate for what comes back in the form of entitlements (and you're not looking at that above, either). This 'obscuring' BS is all pervasive, for example, we're told the current debt to GDP ratio is ~106% but that's a crock. The odd thing is we have people saying: 'Well, I guess we should start to pay attention to that', without realizing the actual number would shock them. We *should* be shocked by the current number but we're not.

For example, capital gains get paid on income tax, but have their own special tax rate which is lower than the rate for conventional earned income. > > Warren Buffett pointed this hypocrisy out a few years ago... > > I'm not the least bit jealous of Warren Buffett; if his > secretary isn't a Democrat, she's probably doing fine too. > "God" (nature) programmed us to over-eat and over-breed. Point being that the tax code provides financial rewards for certain times of activities, some of which are arguably worthwhile as societal builders (classical example being home ownership), but others which are just the near-exclusive tools of the rich (such as Capital Gains) who simply do not need additional incentives, nor is there a broader societal benefit to rationalize it. -hh

Hugh isn't worried about becoming poor; besides, he'd spend "your" money, Steve. Rich Steve asked poor me: > What if MILLIONS came over your wall > while you were busy answering the door ? No: we can have compassion for people using the black market immigration system we have created, too. Does not mean we should not work to fix it, but compassion is not reserved for those people you find "worthy". Those who are causing NO harm but are seeking to better their lives are not doing anything to suggest they should not have compassion. -- Personal attacks from those who troll show their own insecurity. " How may I help you steal today ? ", is the city's vibe. And they're stealing rent too, not just money and alcohol. Children of rich parents are the worst tenants... because they've been raised on _ legal drugs and privilege. One tenant graffitied every inch of his room, ceiling, walls, furniture... everything. Blood splatter everywhere, from his intravenous drug use. He got the hottest chicks and had the foulest mouth. He refused to move out unless I gave him a full refund of his deposit ( which is mom paid, of course ); he'd take me to court, he said. He wouldn't pay rent, and he wouldn't vacate. Lucky for me, his hot/rich girlfriend to took him away... so she could be closer to her heroin source.

Linus Torvalds is a false advocate's hero. Despite all the crowing Steven Petruzzellis's done on this topic, the 'IT Master' does not get how to do this. It really takes a couple seconds to highlight text and 'reverse' it. I just set a filter and won't be impacted by the posts. Steven Petruzzellis's crap has made a mess of usenet via GG, so I don't even bother replying to Snit with my tablet anymore. One thing he has succeeded at with this crap is that the Steven Petruzzellis filter will forever stay. Steven Petruzzellis suffers from neurotic lies so, to him, everything, even people ignoring him, are "attacks". Who *doesn't* know this? I bet he thinks your life was worse than Snit's. For crying out loud, just recently Steven Petruzzellis was declaring himself the only "true Linux advocate", and claiming that "advocates" (in mockery-quotes just to annoy people) are trying to rewrite Tar from scratch. -- What Every Entrepreneur Must Know https://youtu.be/UkAyrfOZaXc http://www.5z8.info/mydick_x6g9hr_nakedgrandmas.jpg Jonas Eklundh Communication AB

The consequence of this approach is that when the crosser turns themselves in as a refugee, they're already inside the USA, so their request *must* be accepted. That's why this Administration has been trying so hard to keep them on the other side of the border line. > currently, an ISIS fighter can fly to Ecuador, > make his way up to the U.S. border and, with help, cross it. Sure, but why walk across Mexico when there's a dozen other options? Even if they want to walk, choose instead the vastly less monitored & defended northern border with Canada. Or take a boat. Plus its also straightforward in some countries to get a passport with someone else's name on it and just fly into the USA as that person. -hh

Speaking of logic RonB ... you should have thought things through before trying to sling an insult. Because as owl points out, the landlord pays property tax regardless of occupancy, which means that the revenue coming in from taxes stays the same while the city has fewer students - thus lower costs. That's no decrease in revenue, with lower payments out. So then, just how does owl's observation make a city's fiscal situation worse than if the unit had been occupied? -hh
