How can you tell who's responsible?

I used some online site to repair it, then uncompressed and compressed
with pdftk. Now it navigates (page-by-page, or jump to page) much
faster. But it ballooned from 28MB to 57MB during the repair process,
and it won't compress down.

Tip: to remove footers, like www.allitebooks.com, uncompress the file,
open it in an editor, replace the string with nothing, and save it.
Then compress it.

Your TOC file is just a collection of scanned images, but to make
the file searchable, OCR text has been included. This OCR text
is not a layer but rather it is ordinary "invisible" text.

In a PDF file invisible text is specified with the "Tr 3,"
or text-rendering-mode-3, directive. Here is an excerpt of another
version of your database PDF that has been done correctly (almost).
The "3 Tr" is in the second line and it means that text is positioned
in an invisible manner over the scanned image:

mutools clean -d correct-copy.pdf correct-copy-clean.pdf

Your TOC PDF file has no such invisible text and I don't know how

I am guessing that the OCR text is contained in some encoded

Thanks for looking into that.

Very occasionally I see highlighting that's misaligned (one or two
letters in a column isn't highlighted) or wonky, but when you paste it,
everything gets copied. Is that a misalignment of the 'invisible' text?

pdftotext (a GuhNoo/GPL program) results were BOGUS compared to
cut-paste from the Windows-based reader Sumatra.

Don't know. It's a strange way to make a PDF. But if the OCR is mangled
then so too will be the hidden text.

Here is a different version of the database.pdf which is posted
to alt.binaries.multimedia.transformation:

q3mmu901e14@news3.newsguy.com

Looking at page 2, the OCR hidden text layer suddenly jumps
from the words "editorial boards" to the TOC on the facing page:

(boards. )Tj
0.0303 Tc 3.336 0 Td
(and )Tj
0 Tc 1.939 0 Td

(of )Tj

[(Database )20(Systems )]TJ

This is exactly how pdftotext and Foxit Reader and Master PDF
Editor will copy the text.

But "pdftotext -layout" will produce an EXACT copy of the two-page
text as seen in the image.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the PDF specs to explain
this behavior but it must depend a lot of the software that created
the PDF.

The people that make these ridiculous scanned-image PDFs should
create a TOC and add it on, but most of them, being Microshit idiots,
can only blindly rely on software to do all things for them.

Sumatra is based on the mupdf libraries which are entirely FOSS.
Mupdf is a product of Artifex, which is the company that also
produces the ghostscript software that forms the basis to ALL
GNU/Linux printing.

Sumatra, like all Microshit contributors, are are scavengers and thieves.

eh? That's what you do, too... unless you've been writing your very own
pdf tools from scratch. And we know you haven't, GuhNoo idiot.

Another ignorant claim born of laziness. SumatraPDF is a GPL-licensed
Free-software project

https://github.com/sumatrapdfreader/sumatrapdf

You clearly don't understand GPL and Free software, either; unlike your
outright theft of MS Office (actually copyright infringement), you can't
steal what's licensed for free usage. This is a standard cola and Linux
idiot lie that's been spewed often, in y'all's weak-minded attempts to
denigrate Microsoft. Get bent, moron(s).

YOU are the one that doesn't understand.

The web page of Sumatra make NO mention of the fact
that their product is merely a cheap GUI wrapper around
the FOSS mupdf libraries. By way of this convenient omission
they are attempting to portray their software to the casual
user as something that is unique.

In the world of software development, this tactic is nothing
more than "dumpster diving."

If a company uses FOSS they are to EXPLICITLY state that
fact. But Sumatra is afraid that people will just bypass
their junk copy and use mupdf instead:

https://mupdf.com

Sumatra = mupdf with a different coat of paint.

But the stupid stooge fell for their ploy. Ha, ha, ha, ha!

YOU are the ignorant clown who claims MS and MS contributors "thieved"

Why don't you understand you can't steal software that's released under
a Free license?

In the same way your scripts are cheap wrappers around FOSS libraries?

Sumatra's GUI is at least as important to the app as the FOSS libraries.

It IS unique.

None of the code you've posted to cola mentioned the libraries you were
using were GPL.  Why not?

heh! Of course that's not a requirement except in some of the source
code files.

Sumatra isn't a copy of anything, and it's a better PDF reader than
anything I've seen for Linux (tho I liked evince).

The more Windows-based PDF reader apps I try, the more I realize Sumatra
is probably the best at what it does. It offers the best combination of
lightweight and speed and functionality. Thanks for recommending it,
slimar.

More laughs at your total and complete ignorance. The mupdf reader for
Windows is a barely-usable pile of crap.

https://imgur.com/a/sUMbiEs

Those are the default views when you open a file in each.

* the mupdf lamers are too incompetent to even put a menu bar in place.

* to access the navigation instructions, you click the About button?

* the shitware can't handle bookmarks.

* it's missing a book view, a continuous view, a file open, and a file
   print.

* it can't correctly deal with windowing (in Windows): whereas Sumatra
opens in the same size and place as when it was last closed, mupdf
always opens in a small window in the same place - left side - on your
screen. The first time you hit any of the navigation keys, the entire
window shrinks back to the size and place where it opened.

* F makes it fullscreen, but when you hit F again the whole window
shrinks back to the same tiny opening size, and it's unusable again
(Sumatra handles it perfectly, of course.)

* it reverses the scroll wheel, or the document, or both. This one is
HILARIOUS: starting with the first page of a document, you can't
scroll down with the mouse (from page 1 to 2 to 3, etc.) But you CAN
scroll up, and the page count goes up. heh!

* open a file, then edge-snap so the app fills half your screen. After
that, the first time you use a file or keyboard operation the screen
will resize and move to a random size and place on the screen.

Only a true idiot would use mupdf to read pdf documents, when so much
better apps are available. And that idiot is you.

I use Sumatra with Windows. It's a very good pdf reader so I prefer it
to the built in readers in Chrome.

Yeah, I've tried about 8 different Windows readers now, and Sumatra is
the best. On Linux, evince is decent.

https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/best-free-pdf-reader

The Javelin reader (standard edition) is good, but Sumatra is faster and
gives more vertical reading space.

SlimPDFReader isn't really slim and fast like they say. It's very slow,
actually, and doesn't handle bookmarks.

Foxit PhantomPDF Business 9 is fast, but it's more than a reader. Has
too many features and too crowded a screen for my taste.

The Opera pdf reader plugin is way barebones.

Ha, ha, ha, ha! It is interesting to read what this Sumatra
developer, i.e. dumpster diver, has to say about the "wonderful"
Microshit Visual Studio:

"To compile you need Visual Studio 2017... Lately C++ evolves quickly
and Visual Studio constantly adds latest capabilities. If things
don't compile, first make sure you're using the latest update of
Visual Studio."

Ha, ha, ha, ha! Those poor dumb-fuck Microshit developers! They
are trapped like crippled rats in that maelstrom of perpetual
Microshit updating.

Microshit has to justify its regular SaaS subscription fee and
therefore this constant updating will only get worse and worse.

Microshit says: "Send us a check every month or you'll lose
the ability to make new stuff as well as lose all your old stuff."

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! What suckers!

With GNU/Linux, however, I can write once and compile forever.

The case is closed.

Sumatra reader says it was produced with Ghostscript 9.26, then modified
with iText 2.1.7 by 1T3XT.

I didn't use iText, but I did add bookmarks to it via jpdfbookmarks (a
Java-based bookmark editor).

But the file was slow when I got it.

It's working well now, tho fairly bloated.

put this in your .vimrc:

:nnoremap <F7> v$<Esc>:s/\%V //g<Esc><CR>/\.<CR>nn

Hit <Esc> to go into normal mode, then navigate to the start of the broken
up word with h,j,k,l,w, or b, and then hit F7. You'll need to do this for
each line, since there is no pattern to the broken word. Small changes
are best done with 'x' on the space, but F7 will take care of all of them.
After F7, you should be dropped to the next line just after the broken
word on that line. Hit 'b' as necessary to back up to the start of it,
and hit F7 again. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

https://streamable.com/z7knh

Not perfect, but it's "fairly" short work, and there doesn't seem
to be any alternative to doing this manually one line at a time
anyway, so if you need it done you just have to bite the bullet.

I downloaded vim for Windows, then updated .vimrc with that line, then
from terminal:

#vim file

and it loaded the data.

ESC didn't seem to do anything.

hjklw or b didn't go to the start of the broken word (D ata in the first
line), so I clicked D with the mouse and hit F7 and it deleted the next
space. Then it immediate highlighted every period in the file

Thanks.

Between Carroll's first regex and my obsessive-compulsive disorder, I
already fixed all broken words and removed the consecutive periods.
Using Notepad++, went through 1033 lines one-by-one and made sure spaces
were closed (also did a bunch of search-replaces when I spotted a pattern).

It's doing that because you have search highlighting on, and the last
thing that the line in .vimrc does is search for a '.' (and go to the
second one after that - 'nn') (n means reapeat match). Just ignore
the highlighting or turn it off, and do the F7 thing on the next line
like I said. It works.

The search highlighting is useful to get visual feedback your regex
using the / key:

If that meant mouse-clicking and backspacing over the spaces, I would
have just left it alone. You do have that ultrawide monitor now, so
it can handle stretched-out words.

I just installed gvim 8.1 in a Win7 VM, and it puts launchers for
"gVim Easy", "gVim" and "gVim readonly". In the "gVim Easy" one, the
navigation keys don't function. Use the regular gVim. Other than
that, the .vimrc line functions properly.

I just asked my 'Magic 8 Ball' about DFS and vim,
it came back with: "Outlook not so good" ;)

I just got the hang of vim, but no kidding - it's much quicker and
easier with the mouse and keyboard. Just click in the right place and
hit Del or Backspace. Much faster than using w and b and F7.
