Copying System32, my Win8 SSD is three times faster than @DFS's. Jeff-Relf.Me <@.> - 2015-04-25 10:26 -0700

Creepy: "DFS should try copying large directory hierarchies with
hundreds or thousands of files. It wouldn't suprise me if
"Linux" finished copying them while Explorer was still
"Preparing to copy files".
DFS: "It would greatly surprise me. If Windows wins that comparison,
too - and I'm confident it will - will you stand up to your wife
for one day?"
Let's test his mewling, using C:\Windows\System32.
1. Make a copy of it:
PS C:\Users\DFS> measure-command {copy-item c:\windows\system32
c:\users\dfs\temptest -recurse -container}
Access to the path 'C:\windows\system32\Com\dmp' is denied.
Access to the path 'C:\windows\system32\config' is denied.
Access to the path 'C:\windows\system32\LogFiles\Firewall' is denied.
Access to the path 'C:\windows\system32\LogFiles\Sum' is denied.
Access to the path 'C:\windows\system32\LogFiles\WMI' is denied.
Access to the path 'C:\windows\system32\MsDtc' is denied.
Access to the path 'C:\windows\system32\networklist' is denied.
Access to the path 'C:\windows\system32\Tasks' is denied.
After copying System32 less the above, I'm left with a partial copy
containing 10,484 files in 889 folders, comprising 2,048,995,328 bytes
on disk.
http://s18.postimg.org/fx3y55j5l/DFS_copy_ops.jpg
2. Now use PowerShell to copy the partial System32 folder to the same
NTFS partition and time it
PS C:\Users\DFS> measure-command {copy-item
c:\users\dfs\temptest\system32_partial_copy1 c:\users\dfs\temptest\system32_
partial_copy2 -recurse -container}
TotalSeconds : 38.189692
3. Now use File Explorer to copy the partial System32 folder to the
same partition and time it
https://youtu.be/ob6XvGbF07U
No evidence of Explorer "preparing" anything. Took about the same time
to copy as with Powershell - add a second or two for me to move mouse to
start the stopwatch.
4. Now boot to Linux and copy the partial System32 from the Windows NTFS
partition to the Linux ext4 partition
dfs@mint17 ~/Desktop $ cp -r
/media/dfs/B07CA4417CA40466/Users/DFS/TempTest/system32_partial_copy1
system32_partial_copy1
5. Now examine the folder

How about that - Linux really did win!
Windows: 38.2 seconds
Linux: 19.4 seconds (~50% faster)
Looks like you don't have to stand up to your wife for a day. Whew!
And I bet you won't run out and find some bogus benchmarks to challenge
this one, will you Creepy?

Why did Windows copy 10,484 files and Linux appears to have only
copied a handful of files?
Am I misinterpreting your data?

You are. du --max-depth=2 examines directories 2 deep. I used it just
to show evidence the whole thing was copied from NTFS to ext4.

You should compare the top speed copy programs like robocopy (Windoze) and rsync (old good Unix) as well as the network copy speeds:
Linux got NFS which is the winner IMHO
Windoze got slower Samba or worst yet their latest hit Webdav which got the worst speed ever yet increasingly used in this modern Cloudy world ('cause everything is firewalled stupid and only https gets through).
In the old good times of DOS there used to be MS protocol called NetBEUI which was superfast AFAIK

NetBEUI isn't routeable. It only used MAC addresses, no IP
It was only useable for small networks

In fact, I can do exactly that:

"Easy to use, but corrupted many of my files" March 08, 2015 | By frekri | Version: Paragon ExtFS for Windows 2.0.395
Pros
Easy to install and setup.
Cons
This software corrupted many of my files on my ext4 file system when I copied files from NTFS to ext4.
</quote>
So use it to try a copy from NTFS to ext4 and see if anything breaks.

I used Paragon a good bit last year, and at some point I believe it DID corrupt my /home partition. As I recall, it rendered it unrecognizable in Linux and Windows. I found the problem. The 'dokan' library used by the Paragon driver is GPL hobbyware - always a bad sign. https://code.google.com/p/dokan/source/browse/#svn/tags/dokan-0.6.0

Solution: recommend it to others! Windoze: when broken means good enough.

Copying System32, my Win8 SSD is three times faster than @DFS's.
13.2 seconds ( ( 60 + 3.73 - 36.42 ) * 2048995328 / 4227047213 ).
xcopy /q /c /s \Windows\System32 \__\test\
4,227,047,213 bytes, 13,209 Files, 1,185 Folders
13 files not copied due to "Sharing Violations".
In a .BAT file:
echo %time% && xcopy /q /c /s \__\test \__\test2\
echo %time%
pause
Results:
10:12:36.42
13209 File(s) copied
10:13:03.73
