Jules Verne described ships that used both sail and steam, depending on
the circumstances.
But current ships use "mechanical" automated sails. It would not do
needing a hundred sailors. The purpose is often to reduce cost, less
fuel needed.
Similarly, there are many solar plants and wind farms in Spain, that
serve the practical purpose of actually reducing the electrical bill.

It has diesel-electric backup propulsion.
That's a diesel generator and some electric motor configuration.
Presumably, not powerful enough for the captain to water ski :-)
When not running for backup propulsion, it could be powered off.
(Or, the diesel power source could function as the APU.)
A second APU could provide power for bridge lights, station keeping
(computers, radar), steerage (if the rudder is too heavy for
mechanical actuation). And for the raising and lowering of sails,
and to keep the Captains towel rack warm. Then you'd have to compare
the magnitude of that load, to decide whether just one good size
diesel running constantly made sense.
They've made tiny automated sail boats, about as big as your bath,
to attempt to cross the Atlantic. Presumably solar power for
electric functions. With no crossing time objective, the machine
makes forward progress, as the situation dictates (no juice in
battery, waits for solar to recharge battery).

Keeping horses in city houses was a pain. My father told me about it.
You have to feed it everyday, even if you are ill and not going
anywhere. Then shovel the shit. Brush it. Then hook it to something with
wheels, or ride it; took sometime to prepare. The horse could slip in
the cobbles and maim itself.
Then the streets were full of shit into which you could tread and smell.
Nah, electric or gasoline cars were a great thing (there were electric
cars before gasoline ones).
Some people complained of the fumes, though. Ugly, noisy, smelly things.
You can never be happy.

Not according to chatgpt.
Q: Was gasoline transport ever subsidized at the start? (I should have asked about gasoline based transport)
A: Yes — gasoline and the infrastructure needed to transport it have benefited from government support since the early development of the petroleum industry, although the details depend on what you mean by “subsidized.”
There is an important distinction between:
* Direct subsidies: governments paying companies to produce or transport petroleum, or helping finance pipelines, railways, ports, and tankers.
* Indirect subsidies: governments building roads, granting tax advantages, protecting oil supplies, or absorbing some of the costs and risks of the industry.
* Public infrastructure: roads, ports, and waterways that make fuel distribution possible, even when they were not built exclusively for petroleum.
Gasoline did not begin as a fully developed, self-financing global distribution system. It grew alongside public infrastructure, government policy, and a petroleum industry that often received preferential treatment.
1. What happened at the beginning?
In the United States, the early petroleum industry received significant tax advantages, but these were primarily designed to encourage oil exploration and production, not gasoline transportation specifically.
* 1916: Tax rules allowed oil producers to deduct certain drilling and development expenses immediately.
* 1918–1926: Special depletion allowances helped oil producers recover the value of oil extracted from underground reserves.
* 1926: A percentage-depletion deduction was introduced, initially at 27.5% of gross income from qualifying oil and gas properties.
These policies helped the industry grow, indirectly supporting the expansion of the supply chains that moved petroleum to refineries and consumers.
2. Was transportation itself subsidized?
Sometimes, yes, but it is important to distinguish between different periods and types of transport.
Transport method How government support could help
----------------- ---------------------------------
Railways Public land grants, loans, or other assistance helped develop rail networks that could carry petroleum.
Pipelines Government regulation, access to rights-of-way, and certain public financing arrangements could facilitate construction.
Ships and ports Public port infrastructure and, in some periods, government support for merchant shipping helped move petroleum.
Road tankers Publicly funded roads made truck distribution possible on a large scale.
These are examples of forms of support, not a claim that every petroleum shipment or transport company received a direct subsidy.
3. The key historical distinction
If your question is whether gasoline became cheap and widely available because governments initially paid to transport it, the answer is more nuanced.
The early petroleum industry benefited from a combination of private investment, technological improvements, economies of scale, favorable tax treatment, and public infrastructure. Direct subsidies specifically for transporting gasoline were not a universal starting point.
The clearest documented early US support was directed toward developing oil supplies rather than paying for each gallon's journey to a filling station.
Are you asking about the United States, Europe (particularly Spain), or the historical development of gasoline transportation worldwide? The answer differs considerably by country, especially when comparing early rail and pipeline networks with the later expansion of road transport.

I've seen too many posts in programming groups that are variants of 'how did people learn to program before ChatGPT?' or 'I wrote this with ChatGPT and it doesn't work. I can't figure out why.' Experienced coders appear to be able to use AI effectively but the next generation depend on it, are clueless, undisciplined, and lazy.

Yeah, a Brave search is really, really, slow.
