Yes, again, though dust pickup is still a problem on my LCDs. It just doesn't 'stick' like a CRT -- Karl Marx said religion is the opium of the people. But Marxism is the crack cocaine.

Odd ... I have noticed my big-screen seems to repel dust ..... some 'permanent static charge' added to the plastic ?

I recall they DID use around 50,000v. The color phosphors of the time were new and kinda shitty, so you had to seriously blast them to get a bright pic. Downside, at that voltage - spill onto the metal shadow-mask created a little beyond 'soft' x-rays. We all sat CLOSE to those little color screens ... "Colors ! COOL !!!" I wonder what our collective exposure was ? Do they figure that in to the collective epidemiology or did the big corps manage to suppress that forever ? B&W phosphors were better - and no metal 'mask'. The electrons hit the phosphor and then glass. Much fewer x-rays.

The idea might have been to stay below 25kV.

That's SMART. However not practical in the late 50s and early 60s for the mentioned reason. But big corps wanted PRODUCT, PROFITS ... so to hell with "safety". Grease yer politicians, no issues ..... RCA spent a damned FORTUNE making usable color TV systems - they needed their investment back REALLY FAST. Cut lots of corners. The original 1950s boxes, NO radiation shield at all. But hey, back then, radiation was still measured in "Sunshine Units" :-) STILL have a good Sony SVGA tube monitor. MAY try to revive it. Surely years of service still in the thing. WILL open the back and vac the dust out however.

Did they have color already? We started with color TV here in the Netherlands 1967... PAL system. I know US had NTSC much longer, lemme google https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_television 1953 NTSC > Downside, at that voltage - spill onto the metal > shadow-mask created a little beyond 'soft' x-rays. > We all sat CLOSE to those little color screens ... > > "Colors ! Indeed, for BW about 12 kV was enough, designed stuff for that, had a round CRT on the workbench at home in the early sixties, no screening :-) Designed and build a BW Vidicon portable camera (battery powered) in 1968, that landed me a job a the national TV network here in the Netherlands. Before that I was designing stuff for Army and Navy, almost got killed on a heli-deck because somebody made a mistake. Made me look for something safer ! There is much fear mongering as far as radiation goes, we had the Chernobyl fallout. where I worked the filters in the aircos had to be replaced as those were 'hot'. Imagine what you were breathing all day. A funny thing I did see was an interview with a guy from the Chernobyl area. Was about radioactivity. He had the head of some animal (dear) on the wall, sat under it. That animal was very radioactive, 'hot'. The reporter asked him: "Are you not afraid of that radioactive thing so close to you?" His reply: "It is good for your cancer". So... There seem to be now 80 year old survivors in Hiroshima after the US nuking in in WW2. Did see an interview with one. Radiation has my interest: https://panteltje.nl/panteltje/pic/gm_pic/ https://panteltje.nl/panteltje/pic/gm_pic2/ https://panteltje.nl/panteltje/pic/sc_pic/ https://panteltje.nl/pub/gamma_spectrometer_plus_probe_plus_geiger_counter_2_IMG_4185.JPG I log radiation 24/7 since year 2020. It changes a bit from place to place... Am 80 years old in a few month... So, ? The Geiger counter does not tick faster if I touch it. xrays? I had that done for teeth once too at a dentist. And several xrays broken arm as kid, lungs.. As a kid, an friend of my father was medical doctor, I was there and I insisted on seeing an xray picture of my hand OK was very interesting!

I've swallowed medical radioactivity, had more x rays and CT scans than I can remember viz: "Radioactive tracers: Doctors attach a radioactive isotope to a chemical compound to form a radiopharmaceutical, which patients swallow or receive via injection. PET and SPECT scans: Scanners detect the gamma rays or radiation emitted by the tracer inside the body to create 3D images of internal organs. Identifying hot and cold spots: Diseased or cancerous tissues absorb tracers differently than healthy tissue, revealing tumors or poor blood flow. Common isotopes: Technetium-99m is widely used for heart, bone, and brain scans, while Iodine isotopes assess thyroid health" The process for disposing of these is casual at best. Patients piss them out, the staff dispose of them into 'low level waste' containers Coal ash contributes more to background radiation than nuclear power ever did. It concentrates the uranium when the carbon is burned. Coal fly ash meets all the criteria for low level waste, except for the fact that it doesn't come from the nuclear industry... ...post Fukushima, the Italian embassy was evacuated from Tokyo to Rome. Rome has a higher level of radiation than the Fukushima exclusion zone... -- It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled. Mark Twain

I took barium paste several times. Not radioactive, just opaque to
X-Rays. Used to see the digestive system in movement.

LOL There is 'radon' in many places / houses Perhaps the reason the background radiation increased when I moved here: https://panteltje.nl/pub/background_radiation_from_one_place_to_the_other.gif More info on radon: https://radon.org/resources/essential-radon-facts-understanding-risks-and-protections/ Gas under houses, specifically radon, can increase radioactivity because it is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps from the ground into homes, particularly through cracks and openings in foundations. Prolonged exposure to high levels of radon can significantly raise the risk of lung cancer. But memeasuring increased background radiation can also be related to how and where you measure it. https://www.epa.gov/radiation/granite-countertops-and-radiation There is also a lot of scare mongering going around Fear sells (all sort of stuff).

Jules Verne described ships that used both sail and steam, depending on
the circumstances.
But current ships use "mechanical" automated sails. It would not do
needing a hundred sailors. The purpose is often to reduce cost, less
fuel needed.
Similarly, there are many solar plants and wind farms in Spain, that
serve the practical purpose of actually reducing the electrical bill.
