Had 'good', but not 'extreme', experience with computers/electronics since the very old days. However I did find those 'other interests' to dilute my attention. Not ashamed ... I'm kind of the New World Handyman, the Generalist. Know ENOUGH about a LOT of things so I can see bullshit and chart a good course. Seems like nobody else can match your computer skill-set - but we are not in these groups because we know EVERYTHING - but because we need extra input on esoteric issues. MANY of those these days. For fun, look into Sumeria ... very informative where it comes to latter regional cultures. Provides 'context', more "Big Picture" about how and why things are so fucked up. How's yer base on mRNA vaccines ? Heavy industrial control panels ? What "fittest" really means ? It's a BIG universe - not ALL computers.

In my career - which was in electronics - I _was_ a generalist (though more on the digital than analogue side), but bosses don't know where to put you: management likes pigeonholes. In general life, I try to learn a bit about a lot - for example, I keep learning wrinkles of plumbing, and have added a washbasin for friends, and recently learnt how to repair a poorly-flushing WC cistern; I know how to wire a plug and generally troubleshoot a lot of things. I don't consider programming ability to be any indicator of greater intelligence but there is a personality type that is drawn to the field and enjoys it. When the demographics changed and Massachusetts had an overabundance of elementary school teachers the idea was they could all find work in the software industries. I can't think of a personality type further from the usual programmer than a 4th grade teacher.

They weren't something you could pick up at RadioShack. I don't remember how many diodes were chained but it was more than 15. They were soldered in a jig and then the whole assembly was potted into a brick about 12" long with lugs on both ends. The capacitors were fabricated from aluminum and RTV. The coils were constructed from 1" wide copper strips. The whole oscillator assembly looked very industrial rather than the simple circuit it was.

As far as I know there were only EVER two AWA E517's (40kW PEP) ever made ... and they were so bleeding edge at the time that the AWA technicians initially employed to maintain/repair them would often bypass Faulty Circuitry rather than fixing it .... so, later in the Equipments lives, when the Aust Army Technicians (like ME) went to fix them, the first thing that had to be done was to find the relevant set of Circuit Diagrams for the particular Transmitter so you knew what alterations had been made where!! Since servicing one without power applied was essentially impossible... ..rather them than me. Cant remember what the magnetrons used, but it wasn't a dry battery...ah. 5.5kV. At 5A.... At one time, I was fixing one of the E519 Transmitters that wouldn't tune correctly ..... so I had to switch off the 7.5kV High Tension, turn off the Low Tension, walk around the back of the 7ft x 3ft Cabinet, slide open the cover, climb a three step ladder, undue four clips so I could remove the interier cover of the H.F. cabinet which caused a knife switch to short the H.T. capacitors to deck and reached in to make an adjustment and *ZAP* !! Apparently, for some reason, the 7.5kV H.T. is filtered across two Capacitors and the knife switch shorts the top line to deck but did nothing to the mid-point, so as I reached in, the inside of my left fore-arm must have caught that mid-point. My mind told me that my right hand had reached in and pulled my left arm off the Voltage point ...... somewhat difficult as I'd lost my right hand and fore-arm sometime earlier in a car accident. -- Daniel70
