Hussein was Sunni, as was most of his party, which was the minority religion in Iraq. The Shi'a were put down hard but I don't know if it was as much religion as Shi'a Iran stirring the pot. Al-Assad was connected with the Alawites. I don't know the nuances but I think saying they're a Shi'a offshoot is like saying Southern Baptists are a Catholic offshoot. The US gets very nervous when it hears nationalism and socialism in the same sentence, particularly when the socialism isn't Marxist. It has enough domestic Marxists running around that it understands how that works. Whatever it is or was I don't think Bush and Obama improved matters. Like Libya keeping a lid on requires harsh measures but at least there was a lid and not a dysfunctional mess.

Yes, but people are hard pressed to find an example of the devout of any other religion freely killing others and claiming that their faith made them do it. Because the koran gives muslims permission to kill, they don't see any of their actions as bad.
