#678909 — A GNU/Linux Machine Takes Shape

FromFarley Flud <ff@linux.rocks>
Date2024-12-03 20:45 +0000
SubjectA GNU/Linux Machine Takes Shape
Message-ID<pan$92e1e$342ece1d$5c1e3f2d$94b93963@linux.rocks>
I have decided to trash my accessory Core i7 machine and replace it
with a Xeon W based system.

The last time I checked, a Xeon W system would cost over $2K and
I was reluctant.

But now I found some fantastic bargains:

Xeon W-1270P

https://www.newegg.com/intel-xeon-w-1270p-lga-1200/p/N82E16819118407

Gigabyte W480 Visual W

https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16813145224

All I need is memory and a heat sink and I'm in business for
less that $1K. (I can reuse my power supply, video card, and
SATA HDD drives -- for now.)

The Xeon W-1270P has 8 cores but it lacks AVX-512 which is no
problem because this my accessory machine.

Of course I would NEVER install that stinking pile of garbage
known as Microshit Winblows on this THIS fantastic machine.

ONLY GNU/Linux can bring out the true power.

ONLY GNU/Linux.

The case is closed.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Are you mentally challenged?
You appear to be retarded.
Asking for a friend.

I'll say -- he's going on about an 8-core processor. (SMDH)

$ grep processor /proc/cpuinfo | wc -l
64
(32 HT cores)

Anybody else?

How am I "going on?"

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! What a dumb-head!

I am merely reporting the CPU type and basic specs.

The Xeon W is a better processor overall. It is more
durable than all AMD junk and it uses ECC memory (of
which I shall acquire 32 G).

However, I am "going on" about the remarkable bargains
that I have encountered. Current Xeon W processors
with similar specs cost about four times as much and
the same for motherboards.

I think vallor may be suggesting, as I would, that your Xeon would
almost work in my computer, being LGA 1200. Your conception of your
machines is peculiar, using older standards and hard drives.

How in fuck do you get 258G instead of 256G?

Are your memory modules supplied by some drunken Chinaman?

I wouldn't give a wooden nickel for that System76 crap.

Yeah, you'd rather have a joke, pitiful custom box with LFS/Gentoo, a
spinning hard drive, etc.

So you can't count from "0". Why am I not surprised?

I noticed you snipped your blathering about ECC memory.

Remember that Feeb does more in one day with 8 cores than you do in a
year with 64. Or so that's the claim from the geek in Mom's basement.

Larry appears to engage some advanced stuff, but at the cost of having
a system that in any way resembles a "PC", it's just a tinkering
setup.

In the past Feeb dedicated 10 new threads and 60 total posts (over 42

Yes, of course, it's obvious from all of his messages and videos. Do you
realize it just now?

In a recent post, he had a problem computing 129*2. Apparently,
he can't be bothered with something simple like:

$ echo '129*2' | bc
258

And he's building the computer version of a Pinto and
calling it a Porche. Whadda maroon.

(At least he knows what ECC memory is, if one takes him
at his word...)

I personally prefer dc, but you can also use eval if on a bash shell.

In your braggart previous posts you never included the "lsmem"
output.

Lsmem is never used to report basic computer specs. The fact
that you used this stupid ploy only indicates that you are a
pompous idiot.

Now get back to your pre-built System76 and your pre-built
Mint. I'm sure that your ass needs pre- and post-wiping.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Bogus.

Save some money and get a better chip: AMD 5800X3D

$300 at Microcenter right now.

Of course you would, so you can bring your Windows work home.

This has got to be a scam. The Xeon W-2223 is selling for -- by
the reputable suppliers who still have it in stock -- $250 and up.

But then one would require a motherboard and these seem to have
fallen off the market.

The fucking commercial computer market is totally insane. There
are new chips released every quarter and the "old" models are
falling off just as fast. Not too long ago, one could pick up
obsolete stuff easily and cheaply but not anymore. Sellers are
not willing to stock anything but the "latest and greatest."

However, if my Hong Kong supplier comes through, I will have a
great system for comparatively dirt cheap.

Furthermore, the GNU/Linux OS will make it perform to its utmost.
