Only suckers work for free especially when corporations like Redhat are making huge profits off their works. These days a mention in some text file giving credit doesn't cut it.

Doing kernel work for no compensation doesn't mean they don't write code for pay at their day job. The Linux kernel work credit gets put their resume and can help land the next gig. So it has practical value, along with the pleasure they get from working on something they love as opposed to some shit project dominated by suits that happens to put food on the table and a 911 in the garage.

I pushed back by resigning from the school board I worked at when it became clear that the ideology had already conquered their thought process. It was a difficult decision, especially since I was tenured, but my wife and I needed to move anyway (because of a commuter train situation which will make it impossible for her to get to work) so I wasn't completely against the idea of working elsewhere and starting from scratch to help her out. There's no point in living on the North Shore of Montreal if I'm the only one who can get to work and it's impossible for her to get to the city in the morning so we'll be moving closer to the centre real soon. Where I am now, for the time being, leftists are around and obnoxious but a minority.
