Okay, my grandmother on my mother's side, was full-blooded Delaware (Lenni Lenappi). I don't consider myself a Native American (Indian). And Elizabeth Warren lists herself as "Native American" when she has less than 1/10th of 1% Indian blood? Delusional much, Senator Warren? So much for her veracity. And since, even after the DNA test, she continues to make the claim ... so much for her logic and sanity. -- The more I see of Windows, the more I like Linux.

Even if you accept this test, she has half the "Native American" (Indian) blood than does the AVERAGE (off-the-street) European. (I don't know if the article meant "European" as "white" or if they meant those who actually live in Europe.) I know I have a LOT more Native American blood in me than she does. I'm a true mutt. LOL!
While you're on that ' computer' idea... I have a few lines of very basic
C asking for user input. I get the following output *immediately* after
entering a GPA value:
webdev$ ./crap
Enter your age: 60
You are 60 years old
Enter your GPA: 3.5
Your GPA is: 3.500000
Enter your grade: Your grade is
--
1 #include <stdio.h>
2 int main()
3 {
4 int age;
5 printf("Enter your age: ");
6 scanf("%d", &age);
7 printf("You are %d years old\n", age);
8
9 double gpa;
10 printf("Enter your GPA: ");
11 scanf("%lf", &gpa);
12 printf("Your GPA is: %f\n", gpa);
13
14 char grade;
15 printf("Enter your grade: ");
16 scanf("%c", &grade);
17 printf("Your grade is %c\n", grade);
18 }
--
I can't spot the issue with it, driving me nuts 'cuz there's nothing to it.
Worse, when I remove the 'age' and 'GPA' sections it works. WTF?!
(I get no compiler errors)

It's reading the previous newline. Don't use scanf. You don't need it.
Use fgets or fgetc and do your own parsing.

Are you sure? I’m pretty sure I removed it and had the same result.

I’ll check them out. Thanks.

Not the newline from the printf. The newline that is left on
stdin from the previous scanf.
Try this:
#include <stdio.h>
int main()
{
int age;
printf("Enter your age: ");
scanf("%d", &age);
printf("You are %d years old\n", age);
double gpa;
printf("Enter your GPA: ");
scanf("%lf", &gpa);
printf("Your GPA is: %f\n", gpa);
char grade;
char huh;
printf("Enter your grade: ");
/* scanf("%c", &grade);
*/
scanf("%c%c", &huh,&grade);
printf("Your grade is %c\n", grade);
printf("Hmm... what's in huh: %c\n", huh);
return 0;
}

So scanf introduces its own newline but printf doesn't?
When I don't use newline on those printf statements that follow the scanf
I don't get my terminal cursor on a new line:
--
#include <stdio.h>
int main()
{
int age;
printf("Enter your age: ");
scanf("%d", &age);
printf("You are %d years old", age);
double gpa;
printf("Enter your GPA: ");
scanf("%lf", &gpa);
printf("Your GPA is: %f", gpa);
char grade;
printf("Enter your grade: ");
scanf("%c", &grade);
printf("Your grade is %c", grade);
return 0;
}
webdev$ ./crap
Enter your age: 10
You are 10 years oldEnter your GPA: 3.2
Your GPA is: 3.200000Enter your grade: Your grade is \
--
"It's reading the previous newline."
I don't get it, why doesn't it happen on the first printf scanf, printf series?
If I understand you correctly it seems like it should.

It works, but why? What does the additional var do to disrupt it from reading
the "previous newline" (something only done on the last series)? In order to use
scanf multiple times I have to add an uneeded var but only on the last usage?
What kind of voodoo is this ;)

Are you saying that this left over \n is being represented %c but only on the
last series?

It's being picked up by %c because a newline matches %c.

No. The newline is left on stdin when you hit it answering the
previous printf question. The scanf only ate what matched,
i.e. the %d or whatever it was.

In the last case, the scanf is looking for a %c. The newline
that is still sitting on stdin from your previous answer matches
for that %c.

The first of the two %c grabs the newline char that was already on stdin
before you entered the "grade" char. The second grabs the grade char.

You can do it with a space too.
scanf(" %c",&grade);
From the scanf manpage:
<quote>
A directive is one of the following:
· A sequence of white-space characters (space, tab, newline, etc.;
see isspace(3)). This directive matches any amount of white
space, including none, in the input.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ NOTE ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
· An ordinary character (i.e., one other than white space or '%').
This character must exactly match the next character of input.
· A conversion specification, which commences with a '%' (percent)
character. A sequence of characters from the input is converted
according to this specification, and the result is placed in the
corresponding pointer argument. If the next item of input does
not match the conversion specification, the conversion fails—
this is a matching failure.
</quote>
scanf is complicated and should not be presented in a beginner's tutorial.
The fact that there is no real need for it anyway is just bonus pain.

When I first posted, I wanted to be unprejudiced and unaffected by herd views. I gave Snit more than an intelligent person could be expected to.
Snit wants to hurt the whole group: If he and his shills can't play here then his flooding crap will. No one who isn't just using you for trolling aim (isn't a troll) sees you as anything remotely close to respectable. You have few but yourself to point to for that. Can you get a little less dense?

Which is why when I removed the first two series it worked because
the first thing it ate was the character I typed, not the extant newline.

I had looked at the description but I was taken aback when I removed the
first two series and it worked, the man info hadn't sunken in. I get it now.

Well, it's easy enough to use once you grasp this aspect. Seems this
would be common enough to warrant an option that ignores an extant
newline but I don't see one listed.

Well, it's not just newline. It's anything left that happens to match
on the next call. And it's not always clear what's happening:
anon@lowtide:~/code$ cat sf.c
#include <stdio.h>
int main()
{
int x;
char c;
printf("gimme int: ");
scanf("%d",&x);
printf("gimme char: ");
scanf("%c",&c);
printf("the int: %d\n",x);
printf("the char: --->%c<---\n",c);
printf("-------------------------\n");
printf("gimme int: ");
scanf("%d",&x);
printf("%d\n",x);
return 0;
}
anon@lowtide:~/code$ ./sf
gimme int: 10x
gimme char: the int: 10
the char: --->x<---
-------------------------
gimme int: 5
5
anon@lowtide:~/code$ ./sf
gimme int: 10xy
gimme char: the int: 10
the char: --->x<---
-------------------------
gimme int: 10 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< I did not type this

I entered '5', then '6' and got:

The second time, you won't get the chance to type the 6, and the 5 gets placed at the int prompt, but then is not printed after that. I don't know why the 5 is even still there after it gets picked off by the first %d. anon@lowtide:~/code$ ./sf gimme int: 5x gimme char: the int: 5 the char: --->x<--- ------------------------- gimme int: 6 6 anon@lowtide:~/code$ ./sf gimme int: 5xy gimme char: the int: 5 the char: --->x<--- ------------------------- gimme int: 5 anon@lowtide:~/code$

I don't like this stuff ;)

One thing I noticed with fgets, I have to allocate 2 'cuz 1 fails...
--
char grade;
printf("Enter your grade: ");
fgets(&grade,1,stdin);
printf("Your grade is %c\n", grade);
(and it whines if I leave off the ampersand, I guess 'cuz it's not an array)
webdev$ ./crap
Enter your grade: Your grade is
--
Change that 1 to a 2 and it works, presumably only taking the first character,
so it seems to have a similar issue.
char grade[2];
printf("Enter your grade: ");
fgets(grade, 2, stdin);
printf("Your grade is %s\n", grade);
How would I do this for just a single character?
I haven't tried to research string manipulation much yet but I did see
this 'pointer' and 'pointer to a pointer' business:

My timely statement stands accurate and correct.
Who *doesn't* know that this kind of poppycock is Sandman Script Troller's MO, not the modus operandi of Klaus Schadenfreude? It is all just projection... the endless posting, the sock puppets, the writing of drivel, the tantrums... the diaper rash and eagerness to show how butthurt he is over being banned from the sandbox for shitting in it again ;) Where did you go to school? Now Klaus Schadenfreude on the other end of the phone doesn't matter. All that matters is Sandman Script Troller gets to deliver his flood. So how to handle it? Don't pay attention the nonsense. Honest discussion isn't part of ruse and never has been.

fgets reads one less than the size argument.

Use fgetc() or getchar() for single char. But you can loop and get all chars
and do whatever you want with them. The stream argument can be a file
opened with fopen(). See the manpages.
Also take a look at the comp.lang.c faq (c-faq.com) and K&R book
(pdf online somewhere, but it's worth buying a copy).

A pointer is an address in memory. A "string" in C is a pointer to char.
The string is made up of the char at that starting address, along with all
following chars, up to and including a terminating '\0'. You have to
allocate enough memory to hold all of that.
