He's making a comparison you idiot.
That's your problem Ahlstrom, you are a single tasker who goes through
life making a single choice and never bothering to explore the
alternatives.

In your case it's Linux, amongst other things I'm sure.

Jump in the fray, Creepy. Give us a python version.

Or play it like you usually do: stand meekly on the sidelines and make

I tweaked my code and now it processes 1 million addresses in 0.02 sec.
on my 486. No need for y'all to see the initial 25-address file or the

Are you trying to say I'm lying? That perl can't process the addresses in the
time I claimed?

There're lots of perl tools for Windows, so I could run your code
against my address list and see how it works.

Sure:

#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
use warnings;
use 5.010;
$/ = "\n\n";
open my $fh, "<addresses.txt" or die;
open my $oh, ">out.txt" or die;
my (@o, @l);
while (<$fh>){
	chomp;
	s/Call now\!//mi;
	chop;
	@l = split "\n";
	my $f = $l[0] . "," . $l[2] . "\n";
	push @o, $f unless grep {$_ eq $f} @o;
}

Is the 'mi' in your code looking for the 'mi' in line 4? If it changes
to 0.48 km will your code fail?

Nope, "mi" means multiline and case insensitive in the preg replace.

The distance is in $l[3] and is ignored.

   *Untested*, but see if this is any faster... This is your VB, just
rearranged a bit. If it fails on the recordset stuff try just reverting
the Open command to yours and reversing the comments on the
.Update/.UpdateBatch methods.

#1 - Skips intermediate output file by writing to the 'dictionary'
(removing duplicates) and the recordset at the same time.
#2 - Uses the recordset .UpdateBatch method instead of .Update

After a few small fixes (noted in the code below), it runs in 0.33
seconds, so good improvement from 0.53.

> #1 - Skips intermediate output file by writing to the 'dictionary'

Not long after the first post in this thread, I came to my senses and
rewrote it to skip 2 unneeded file writes. That code is in the thread:
"Fabian: now I'm processing 10,000 addresses in 0.33 seconds"

See that post for a virtual $1 million if you can speed it up even further.

> #2 - Uses the recordset .UpdateBatch method instead of .Update

I'll have to remember that one.

Compilation error: VBScript doesn't accept different data types. In
case you didn't know, they're all Variants.

I dropped the 'as String'

Compilation errors: I removed trailing comma, and had to declare
adLockBatchOptimistic as a Const (or put 4 in its place)

Runtime error. VBScript dict object uses Exists method. I replaced.

   I only program in *VBA* when I have to... So the fact that it works
without modification (to the logic) is nice! I doubt it could be speeded
up another 38% at this point.
