Took the base 25 addresses, and copied until I had 10,000 entries.

My superior MS Windows VBScript then transformed 10,000 addresses from 4
lines per address to one line per address (removing extraneous lines and
words in the process), delimited it, de-duped the 10,000 rows, then
sorted, then saved ... all in just over half a second? WTF!? And the
final result was 25 unique lines, as it should be.

10,000 addresses in 0.53 seconds? Holy Shit that's fast! Using an i5
WinTel PC, I can deliver a sorted 100,000 mailing label .csv file in
just over 5 seconds!

You - and the slow, bumbling, incomprehensible New/Linux bash and perl
crapware - CANNOT compete. You know it and I know it. You're fired for
promoting that hobbyware.

I added timers and address counters to the code. Now, when you move to
the big leagues (Microsoft Windows and the best software on Earth),
you'll have a nice address processing module to keep you employed. Keep
it with you at all times.

It fails miserably on the issue of PORTABILITY.

The whole point of a programming language is universality.
It should operate in any machine environment anywhere.
Languages such as Perl and C fulfill that imperative.

But Microshit VBA will operate ONLY in a Microshit environment
and ONLY within a specific VERSION of that Microshit environment
(Ha, ha, ha! As if we can place a version number on shit.).

Any reasonable human will summarily reject that restriction.

Like Dirty Harry said: "Portability is for assholes"

And portability wasn't one of your requirements. Your bogus claim was
that Windows has no native tools to do that little task:

"I ain't got no tools... There's no goddamn fuckin' tools built into
Windows that enable me to do this... we can sit back and laugh hahahaha
at that stupid, fucked-up joke of an operating system called Microsoft
Windows"

You still laughing thru your broken nose?

Windows IS universal. That's why you use it to make a living.

Sure you can.
About LibreOffice: Version: 5.1.0.3

A reasonable human would know more about other operating systems before
spouting "I ain't got no tools."

If Fibian is the voice in those videos he posts it's obvious that
there is something wrong with him, mentally or otherwise.

NEWSFLASH: In 2016, DooFuS has been reduced to sorting mailing labels - LOL. Yeah, that is just about his speed.

It's honest work. Better than plagiarizing for a living.

You mean that DooFuS actually goes around begging for money? I thought that the putz was making money hands over fists. The tard must have a printing press in his bathroom.

Looking good to the untrained eye - and extremely impressive for a
one-liner sed statement - but I'm all over it:

Your input data doesn't match the format of mine. You need to:

* drop a specific phrase off the end of the 3rd line
* drop the 2nd and 4th lines
* split the street from the address line
* add a header line with a chosen delimiter
* handle a comma delimiter by removing all other commas (which slows my
new version down from 0.33 to 0.36 seconds)

Start:
Carlitos Mexican Restaurant, Inc
RESTAURANTS MEXICAN
2445 Moon Rd, Grayson, GA 30017 Call Now!
0.3 mi

Finish (comma delimiter):
Name,Street,CityStateZip
Carlitos Mexican Restaurant Inc,2445 Moon Rd,Grayson GA 30017

Finish (semicolon delimiter):
Name;Street;CityStateZip
Carlitos Mexican Restaurant, Inc;2445 Moon Rd;Grayson, GA 30017

You can do it!

Trivial.

In all cases? Might the second line be a critical part of the
address? The "0.3 mi" thing can be regex'd out without reference
to its line number. You sure that by-line-number is the way you
would want it handled?

Is that a special case for a problematic entry or would they all
be like that?

You're just the man for that...

Yes. Sometimes the 4th line has a website
"0.7 miwww.burgerking.com"

All the addresses are like that. They were cut and pasted from a search
I did at:

http://www.usdirectory.com

Fabian Russell used it for his mailing labels videos and perl code, so I
used it, too.

The requirements I listed are dictated by the format of the data. I
added an if-then for the delimiter, just because when you say .csv file
some people expect commas.

A gotcha to remember: using a comma delimiter means the 'City, State
Zip' can't have a comma in it. I like 'City, State Zip' format, but it
won't mess up the Post Office.

I also like # as a delimiter, or a pipe |

Another gotcha to remember: ANY character used as a delimiter can't be
part of the address data, or the file won't parse correctly.

Your 0.24 is doubling as we speak... 0.36 is the VBS benchmark with a
comma-delimiter, 0.33 with a semicolon or other delimiter.

* also didn't write a file out.

* looks like you're fudging by looking for 'mi' in line 4, instead of
just deleting the entire line regardless of contents.

   sed -e 's/;[0-9]*\.[0-9]* mi.*$/;/g' \

* does sed not support an if-then, so you can run one script for
all delimiters, rather than separate scripts?

That's what '>' operator is for. You really want me to do that and
time it?

That's not "fudging." It's pattern matching. At that point in the
processing the file looks like this:

anon@lowtide:~/code/dfs$ ./sortem5 | tail -n 5
Riverside Pizza;RESTAURANTS PIZZA;1845 Grayson Hwy Ste 1400, Grayson, GA 30017 Call Now!;0.7 mi
Taco Bell;RESTAURANTS FAST FOOD;1855 Grayson Hwy, Grayson, GA 30017 Call Now!;0.7 miwww.tacobell.com
Thai Taste Restaurant;RESTAURANTS FAMILY STYLE;1009 Athens Hwy, Loganville, GA 30052 Call Now!;1.7 mi
Thai Taste Restaurant;RESTAURANTS FAMILY STYLE;1009 Athens Hwy, Loganville, GA 30052 Call Now!;1.7 miwww.subway.com
Zaxby's;RESTAURANTS FAMILY STYLE;1931 Grayson Hwy, Grayson, GA 30017 Call Now!;0.7 miwww.zaxbys.com
anon@lowtide:~/code/dfs$

After the step that strips the "miles," it looks like this:

anon@lowtide:~/code/dfs$ ./sortem6 | tail -n 5

Just making sure your script does everything mine does.

Thanks for explanation.

Tomorrow I'll reboot over to Linux and run your sed against my 10000
addresses and check the speed.
