Probably the same reason opposites get married, they believe they can change the other person. It usually fails.

Every once in a while I will see one on the stands and buy it... for example the issue that showed Lance Armstrong / Alfred E. Neumann on the cover, with syringes filled with steroids hanging off his arms. He was one of the "Year's Biggest Idiots". It was a decent issue. I'm not sure why the trolls make fun of people reading an occasional MAD Magazine issue. The humor in it is far more sophisticated than their hyena chortles, though not quite as mordant as Voltaire's "Candide". -- You can create your own opportunities this week. I remember one of the paperback collections, a few decades ago, which had a weird story about an animated heap of garbage [1]. Here's an article about the magazine version: http://dr-hermes.livejournal.com/683631.html Hoo boy. This one is worth srudying for all the little gags and visual puns and eyeball kickers packed into the panels. When Will Elder did the art, he certainly put enough chicken fat into it. "Outer Sanctum" is from MAD# 5, June 1953, those early issues when MAD was a full-color comic book (before going to black & white magazine format to escape the Comics Code). I would nomimate those color issues of MAD as among the best stories ever printed in comics format. It wasn't just that they were funny in a demented way, it was that Harvey Kurtzman wrote them with his usual jaundiced outlook that saw through any sort of pretension. The spoofs in early MAD had real bite to them. [1] Grandfather of "Slimer"? -- The better part of valor is discretion. -- William Shakespeare, "Henry IV"
