You nailed it well, Peter. Michael Glasser is a moron. You've proved
that yet again. Others appear not to be embarrassed by association which
in itself is telling...

Fool. The install script isn't an admin.

Idiot. I saw you putting words in his mouth.

"You are even so incompetent that you think that every user is able to
run su or sudo."

He never said that. You lied.

But if he believes that, it's probably because of the issue I noted
above: the installer often gives the first account sudo permission, so
you would think it's normal (if you never had to go thru the process of
using root to assign users to groups).

Problem is: It will not run without root permissions

And no, usually there is no "install script", you incompetent fool.
Usually there is some RPM or DEB package which is installed by the package
manager. Which will run with root permissions.

*If* there is really an "install script" which is runable without root
permissions, it needs to install into the homedir of that user.

Then again that user can't harm the system, as the installed program can
only run with the users permissions.

Do you incompetent snittish fool need every little bit of unix konwledge
explained to you? You certainly do not know even basic things about unix,
just like Dim Rabbit or Snit Michael Glasser

And all of this is correct.
I don't like as a user to install a large program that I know is going
to create a lot of directories in user land. Best be as root and
install it where all other apps are at, like gcc, etc.

I don't know if it does.

You may need to get into your twister costume and label the person
installing the distro "the admin", but it's a stretch.

Do you know for a fact root is required to write the /etc/passwd file?
Here's the contents of mine.

The only entry I affected was the next to last line (during the install

assigned groups to it.

It does.

It's not me labeling the person admin; it's the script running with
elevated privileges, i.e. setuid root. Ubuntu installer ubiquity,
for example, checks for uid==0, and if not runs pkexec (which is setuid root)
to execute ubiquity as root.

Of course. /etc/passwd privs are 644 root.root.

It's obvious. There is no knowledge there. Michael Glasser has proved
repeatedly that he's clueless.

If they are then they are. It all comes out. They make claims that are
easily shown to be incorrect. You're dealing people that don't care how
wrong they are. They're just trolling regardless.

Not based on what I see here, no.

The hell you say! You wouldn't hire Snit to build you a website? Even if he promised not to use Dreamweaver ;)

Well, Windows 10 at least needs a form of encryption which isn't
compromised by the start. Bitlocker is essentially sold out to the NSA
from the get-go so you'll need to use third-party utilities. Also, the
fact that it is possible to hack into a user's account when they are at
a locked screen within 20 seconds is very troubling. I don't know of any
way around that other than shutting down after each use.

There's nothing wrong with third party utilities, you could argue that
due to the way OpenSource works, everything in Linux apart from the
kernel is third party.

You wouldn't hack into any of my desktop systems even if I gave you the
username and password, they all use 2FA. Trivial to set up.

That's how I see it and it's an excellent point.

Two-factor authentication is a must. I have it on my e-mail account and
even my Microsoft account uses it. Anyone who believes that it's
unnecessary is grossly uninformed.
