No, for two reasons. First, if the work product had been for internal use only, then he wouldn't have stated: "We develop real core advances that evolve into highly efficient open source that anyone can use and enjoy." Second, as per the above, it does appear that the intended claim was that the company was purposefully developing OS software with the intention of giving it away. Granted, this could be as part of another product which is what is being sold, but that part wasn't mentioned nor clear, so I essentially just asked what their basic business case was. Simply put, without any revenue stream, it's hard to pay employees so that they can put bread on their table. Overall, I would have been perfectly fine if the claim was something as simple as "Approach X is preferred because it allows us to have lower in-house development costs than using Approach Y"...but that perspective was not stated implicitly or explicitly. Particularly in business, clarity in communications goes a long ways. -hh

The only people free software is not profitable for is Microsoft, or Apple, or Adobe ... for everyone else, commercial, licensed products is just overhead. You pass on the costs to the customer for these products so you can service and maintain their computers. With free software you don't have to worry about passing on the cost and you don't have to worry about licenses, you just have to worry about service -- and that's where the bulk of your revenue comes from anyhow. -- Zero tolerance for WinDrones and iCultists

Let's start with was actually originally said, not your revisionist *claim* of what it said. > Of course your claim, that such a service existed, was just another > of your lies... Oh, there's plenty of third party review sites for entertainment media such as movies or TV shows: IMDB.com is a well-known example for the former; www.ign.com/tv and tvguide.com are examples of the latter. > "BTW, a suggestion: MAN UP and publish a guide to the "500 Flavors > of Linux" that provides actually useful information for people > considering Linux" - lying asshole "-hh" Yup, and I'm still waiting for you to deliver. What underlies what you have in your pwned sig file is that the Linux advocates have tried to claim that the "most downloaded" list at distrowatch.com is more than just a dumb counter. Unfortunately, it lacks anything even close to an actual product review such as the likes of IMDB. And that was my point: it fails to materially inform a novice who's shopping for Linux just what the differences are between any of their choices to help them choose the right one for their needs. Which is why you're still pwned. Poor chrisv. -hh

Our software is used on greater than 95% of the top 500 super clusters and is unparalleled in financial transactions though its use in most major stock exchanges. Hell Oracle likes to call their repackaged Red Hat, unbreakable. We have a solid track record for stability and at scale. Linux scales. >> Using FOSS reduces costs, increases quality, and reduces time to >> market. > > There are cases where this is true. One could even say that the reduced time to market is often at the expense of quality in proprietary software. Hence Microsoft's concept of release early, and fix later. >> These are good things for companies (and for their >> customers). What is good for companies is usually good for the >> company's employees. Duh. > > So Apple's high profits, which are good for them, you think are good for > their customers. Interesting. Yes, a good company with healthy profits ensures payroll is met. That's good for employees. A profitable company is able to reinvest profits in new technologies which is also good for the employees that develop such technology. It provides them with job satisfaction. It makes them leaders in their field which makes them marketable and valued. An employee of Blackberry for example is likely less valued than an employee working on something state of the art for Android or iOS, the two leading mobile platforms. A Tesla engineer for example is worth more than say someone who works at GM. Tesla Motors is at the front of engineering in a new modern world of electric cars. > For me I do not really care. Android is standing on the shoulder's of the giant called, Linux. And it is selling 80 million phones for Samsung last quarter. They put food on their table. Amazon just had a blow out quarter. Their AWS services running on and selling Linux services has risen 69% in year over year growth. Just look at a 5 day chart of AMZN stock and you'll see something quite rare. Go ahead, see for yourself. Docker is already worth more than a Billion dollars. And if Microsoft tries to buy them it will likely cost them $5 billion. Food on the table is no problem for open source software. Plenty of fortune 500 companies actively invest and contribute in open source software. Just ask Intel, IBM, AMD, nVidia, Amazon, Google, Facebook, RakcSpace, Oracle, HP, Dell, Red Hat, SuSe, Canonical and many more. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

You don't get it at all. You can write software using GPLed code and hence have to open the source too. If you do that in contract for a company, what incentive would they have to give it away for free to others? They don't need to, and most companies would not do it. After all, they paid for the development, and they would be idiots (like you are) if they would distribute it to others for free. They may be *selling* it to other companies (and give those the source code, too), who then again would nmot feel like "giving it away" You are a totally incompetent imbecile, and it shows
