Idiot. You claim that "it can also increase businesses costs"

Now point us to *actual* situations where that does occur, lying imbecile

Idiot. You can't back up your idiotic claim, and now you want to imply that
I can't understand your answer. You did not answer, you try to weasel out of
your idiocy

You claim that "free software can also increase businesses costs"

Now back up your bullshit claim or admit that you again claimed bullshit

How about a person with Udemy videos who says that the two "types" of tags are inline and block? You not only said that but tried to sell that to people for $50. I pointed it out and you took the video off of free preview.

You screwed up again. People can still watch it. I have my copy and am happy to share it. Wait until I contact your wife with your newest crap.

Hint: You failed *again* to back up your claim. You know, your claim that
"free software can also increase businesses costs"

Instead you try to veer off unto a different tnagent, knowing fully well
that your claim was bullshit and completely idiotic

So much for your lie that you "always back up your claims with facts".
You don't

Free software isn't the best tool in every situation? Thanks for the
"news flash", idiot thing.

The point is that -highhorse is so stupid that he can't figure-out
that Free software is "profitable", and many people get paid to work
with it, despite the fact that it isn't "sold".

Cue asshole's cavilling.

Misquote. Now here's what Marek Novotny wrote:

"So we have two examples going on here....Apple's more interested in
selling you some more cute features on top of whatever they delivered
last year. That's their business model. We don't do that. We develop
real core advances that evolve into highly efficient open source
products that anyone can use and enjoy. We're not milking you like
Apple is or like Adobe is. We're giving it all away."

Note "we're giving it all away". And this was repeated:

"We're not making something we hope you'll buy."

Except it isn't a trivial omission to spend one's value-added time
working on something with zero expectations or plan to receive any
value in return on that work product. Specifically, since this FOSS
wasn't allegedly intended to be sold, then just what is the work
product which does get sold by the company he works for so that he
can be paid and put food on his table?

Are you asking why a company that doesn't sell software might have
software developers or system administrators on staff?

No, for two reasons.

First, if the work product had been for internal use only, then he
wouldn't have stated: "We develop real core advances that evolve
into highly efficient open source that anyone can use and enjoy."

Second, as per the above, it does appear that the intended claim
was that the company was purposefully developing OS software with
the intention of giving it away. Granted, this could be as part
of another product which is what is being sold, but that part
wasn't mentioned nor clear, so I essentially just asked what their
basic business case was. Simply put, without any revenue stream,
it's hard to pay employees so that they can put bread on their table.

Overall, I would have been perfectly fine if the claim was something
as simple as "Approach X is preferred because it allows us to have
lower in-house development costs than using Approach Y"...but that
perspective was not stated implicitly or explicitly. Particularly
in business, clarity in communications goes a long ways.

Nothing precludes in-house development from being non-proprietary. This
is particularly true if your goal is to encourage community participation
in further development of some aspect of the software that might otherwise
go unattended but which would be highly beneficial to your own needs.

If your infrastructure runs on open-source, your revenue stream might
benefit by giving it proper HR attention.

So does an ability to resist interpolating one and only one specific
from a generalization.

A fair enough point, but it still comes back to what's ultimately just
a "Make or Buy" business decision ... and every time that each one of
us buys finished goods ourselves instead of making the same from
scratch, it shows that there's many many exceptions to the mantra
of "always better to DIY". Doesn't matter if we're talking software,
hardware, a household electrical/plumbing/etc service call, or even a
literal loaf of bread to put on one's table.

The only people free software is not profitable for is Microsoft, or
Apple, or Adobe ... for everyone else, commercial, licensed products is
just overhead. You pass on the costs to the customer for these products
so you can service and maintain their computers. With free software you
don't have to worry about passing on the cost and you don't have to worry
about licenses, you just have to worry about service -- and that's where
the bulk of your revenue comes from anyhow.

Nice attempt to try to change the subject, but the point remains:
if they give away their work product as FOSS, then what do they do
to actually make money to put bread on their table?

I said exactly that? Cite please. Let's start with was actually
originally said, not your revisionist *claim* of what it said.

Oh, there's plenty of third party review sites for entertainment media
such as movies or TV shows: IMDB.com is a well-known example for the
former; www.ign.com/tv and tvguide.com are examples of the latter.

Yup, and I'm still waiting for you to deliver. What underlies what
you have in your pwned sig file is that the Linux advocates have
tried to claim that the "most downloaded" list at distrowatch.com
is more than just a dumb counter. Unfortunately, it lacks anything
even close to an actual product review such as the likes of IMDB.

And that was my point: it fails to materially inform a novice who's
shopping for Linux just what the differences are between any of
their choices to help them choose the right one for their needs.

Which is why you're still pwned. Poor chrisv.

You lack the brains to see that.
After all, what do you think the income of companies like RedHat or Suse

The end product or service, that using FOSS facilitates, is what
brings-in the money, dipshit.

Using FOSS reduces costs, increases quality, and reduces time to
market. These are good things for companies (and for their
customers). What is good for companies is usually good for the
company's employees. Duh.

And the hundreds of companies that power their products with embedded
Linux. And the thousands of companies that exploit Free software to
power their infrastructure.

Sheesh. No "bread on the table" anywhere there!

The product is given away for free. Yeah, some might skirt the license and
find a way to sell it, but the product itself is free. No cost.

But, sure, services... and service is important. But a company should have a
financial incentive to want to make products that need as little servicing
as possible.

There are cases where this is true. Also cases where proprietary software
reduces cost, increases quality, and reduces time to market.

So Apple's high profits, which are good for them, you think are good for
their customers. Interesting.

For me I do not really care. I want them to profit enough to stay viable,
but I do not care if they are making more than that. I do not see how it
benefits me.

You can sell GPL software. You just have to provide the source code for
free, including any modifications you make to it.

Our software is used on greater than 95% of the top 500 super clusters
and is unparalleled in financial transactions though its use in most
major stock exchanges. Hell Oracle likes to call their repackaged Red
Hat, unbreakable. We have a solid track record for stability and at
scale. Linux scales.

One could even say that the reduced time to market is often at the
expense of quality in proprietary software. Hence Microsoft's concept of
release early, and fix later.

Yes, a good company with healthy profits ensures payroll is met. That's
good for employees. A profitable company is able to reinvest profits in
new technologies which is also good for the employees that develop such
technology. It provides them with job satisfaction. It makes them
leaders in their field which makes them marketable and valued. An
employee of Blackberry for example is likely less valued than an
employee working on something state of the art for Android or iOS, the
two leading mobile platforms.

A Tesla engineer for example is worth more than say someone who works at
GM. Tesla Motors is at the front of engineering in a new modern world of
electric cars.

Wrong. Android is standing on the shoulder's of the giant called, Linux.
And it is selling 80 million phones for Samsung last quarter. They put
food on their table.

Amazon just had a blow out quarter. Their AWS services running on and
selling Linux services has risen 69% in year over year growth. Just look
at a 5 day chart of AMZN stock and you'll see something quite rare. Go
ahead, see for yourself.

Docker is already worth more than a Billion dollars. And if Microsoft
tries to buy them it will likely cost them $5 billion.

Food on the table is no problem for open source software. Plenty of
fortune 500 companies actively invest and contribute in open source
software. Just ask Intel, IBM, AMD, nVidia, Amazon, Google, Facebook,
RakcSpace, Oracle, HP, Dell, Red Hat, SuSe, Canonical and many more.

You don't get it at all. You can write software using GPLed code and hence
have to open the source too. If you do that in contract for a company, what
incentive would they have to give it away for free to others? They don't
need to, and most companies would not do it. After all, they paid for the
development, and they would be idiots (like you are) if they would
distribute it to others for free. They may be *selling* it to other
companies (and give those the source code, too), who then again would nmot
feel like "giving it away"

You are a totally incompetent imbecile, and it shows
