Yeah, it was stupid. But it's not the dumbest thing he's claimed after being caught. When it was proven plain and simple that Snit posted to usenet using the same comcast IP that one of his sock puppets (way back before he learned about TOR), he came up with this nugget: Snit 01/07/2004 03:12:39 AM <BC20B927.3972D%snit@nospam-cableone.net> "I have no idea who Sigmond is. It's been a curiosity of mine to see the code. I'm not the one posting the statistics, however. But the code is pretty straightforward if I was to post stats, since I have all the data in a SQL database. -- Sandman

This retrieves headers and body for a range of hard-coded article IDs,
and stores the data in a SQLite database. I use DB Browser for SQLite
to view the data.
Look in the code for "range(583302,583305)" Replace them with specific
article IDs. Not the best way to get the data, but this is just a demo.

Isn't that for a web client connection? They also list news.eternal-september.org there on the standard port 119.

You can talk to the server over telnet and get a feel for writing
whatever thingie you want to build. See RFC 3977 and friends.
This alerts you of new message in a group (run as ./poll.py <newsgroup>):
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
anon@lowtide:~$ cat poll.py
#!/usr/bin/python
import socket
import time
import sys
import datetime
import Tkinter
import tkMessageBox
server='localhost'
port='119'
username='gohde'
password='PUTZ'
if len(sys.argv) < 2 :
print "feed me a group"
sys.exit()
if len(sys.argv) > 2 :
print "feed me a group and nothing else!"
sys.exit()
group=sys.argv[1]
s=socket.socket(socket.AF_INET,socket.SOCK_STREAM)
s.connect(("localhost",int(port)))
print s.recv(256)
s.send("authinfo user " + username + "\n")
print s.recv(256)
s.send("authinfo pass " + password + "\n")
print s.recv(256)
saved_y="0"
while (1):
print "loop"
s.send("group " + group + "\n")
x=s.recv(8192)
y=x.split(" ")[3]
if int(y)<=int(saved_y):
time.sleep(3)
continue
else:
z="xpat from " + y + "- *\n"
s.send(z)
x=s.recv(256)
x=s.recv(256)
window=Tkinter.Tk()
window.wm_withdraw()
message="new post:\n " + x
tkMessageBox.showinfo(title="wake up, tard!", message=message)
window.destroy()
saved_y=y
time.sleep(3)
s.close()
anon@lowtide:~$

I was thinking "where is John Gohde? Is he asleep again?" when I
wrote it. Looks like I left localhost hard-coded in the connect.
You'll want to change that to "server" (without quotes).
