That's line count, not address count. Divide by 5 = 2000 addresses.

Scary fast. My VBS program was 0.33 seconds to process 10K addresses,
and I was shocked at that. It was 52 lines of code.

Looks good.

Not that MS Excel is the arbiter, but a .csv file won't open correctly
in Excel unless it's comma-separated (quote-delimiter not required).

Well, perl is the king of anti-verbosity. I'm pretty sure this could all be
done in a one-liner :)

This isn't true, Excel supports semicolon as delimiter.

I thought it'd be like LibreOffice Calc, which let's you specify
a number of delimiters.

As of Excel 2003 it is true (unless you use the Data Import Wizard).

You mean it supports semicolon as a separator?

Delimiter encloses the data in a field, the separator separates the fields.

"Carlitos Mexican Restaurant, Inc";"2445 Moon Rd";Grayson;"GA 30017"

is quote-delimited, semicolon-separated

If you dbl-click to open a semicolon-separated .csv file in Excel 2003,
it doesn't parse at all. Everything shows in column A. But if you use
a comma separator, it parses out into columns.

It's semantics, and can be used either way. Here's how Wikipedia defines it:

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delimiter-separated_values>

"the following fields in each record are delimited by commas, and
   each record by newlines:

   "Date","Pupil","Grade" "25 May","Bloggs, Fred","C"

Also:

"Note the use of the double quote to enclose each field. This
prevents the comma in the actual field value (Bloggs, Fred; Doe,
Jane, etc.) from being interpreted as a field separator."

Here's the RFC:

<https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4180#section-2>

Which mentions the word "delimiter" only once and is in reference to the
newline (i.e. each post should be delimited by a newline). The word "delimiter"
allows for both interpretations and you are free to use it either way if you so
choose, but don't try to say that your interpretation is the only valid one :)

They're not sorted. That'll add 10 seconds.

Of course not, sorting is super quick:

 sandman@Fantasy ~/Desktop/dfs> wc -l process.php
      16 process.php

0.12 seconds for 10k addresses (not 10k lines), fully sorted and fully
compliant CSV output, all in 16 lines of PHP code.

I did it with PHP because it has built in CSV functions, and I didn't have the
CSV libraries for perl, and I couldn't be bothered. Perl is obviously a bit
faster.

First field is truncated. Perl fails again. :)
BTW, why do you leave the City unquoted?

Incorrect.

Because proper CSV doesn't require it to be enclosed. That's why you use a CSV
library instead of just handmangling it.

Not due to the script, but due to line lengths in usenet postings.

How does usenet line length strip a character off the tail end of the
*first* field? ('"...Grill";' becomes '"Gril";', '"Pizza";' becomes
'"Pizz";', etc.).

Oh, sorry, misunderstood you. When you said "first field" I assumed you meant
"first line", which had a line break in it.

I'm going to assume it's a 'chop' going wild there.

There's undoubtedly a wide range of speeds across all the different
scripting languages, even for these small problems.

Indeed, but perl is crazy efficient when it comes to handling data in this way,
for a scripting language.
