It is true.

No. A group is defined not by it's name, but by it's contents.

When the "advocates" are left to their idiocy, this is nothing but a
hate-MS group. Ironically, most of the MS-haters make their living with
Windows.

For many, it is still true.
And for updates, it is mostly true

Liar. You can barely find ONE, let alone many.

Irrelevant. wRonG said applications. You're both liars.

So IE is not a application? Each update for IE has mandated a reboot

"Updates" are to be had for the (few) MS applications shipping with windows.

It is *for* applications, though
And all too often after "updating a application" windows needs to be
rebooted
The reason is simple: If a DLL used by many apps is updated too, it can't be
done because windows refuses to replace the existing one with the new one as
long as it is still "in use". Since the concept for "being in use" is so
incredibly idiotic done on windows, those "direct updates "nearly always
fail and need to be done during the reboot

If you had any knowledge about the braindead concept of updates on windows,
you would stop making such snittishly stupid claims

Where all updates on Linux are so smooth, right?

You can also read about the "package update. It is not recommended because:
    -----
    1. Slow: APT will download the new version of all the packages
installed on your system. Using a fresh upgrade you could have
downloaded all that data by simply getting the ISO.

    2. Unreliable: Depending on your modifications, your sources, your
added software and your configuration you could end up with a
system that acts and feels really different than a brand new
version of the newer Linux Mint release. You're far from the
beaten track and the added features might not work as well on
your system as they were designed to.

    3. Risky: The temptation when you upgrade with APT is not to
perform backups... since your partitions aren't overwritten,
nothing "forces" you to make backups... think about the risk
       though.

    4. Complicated: Packages conflict with each others, they can bring
complex dependencies and put you in situations that are
       difficult to solve.
    -----

Updates in Linux can be slow, unreliable, risky, and complicated. It can
lead to errors that are "difficult to resolve" based on the "complex
dependencies" that are just a part of living with desktop Linux.

You can pretend otherwise, Peter, but it comes down to you know NOTHING of
Lunux.

Sorry... had it in earlier posts:
<https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2>

> Maybe you could elaborate about your own
> experiences with respect to 1-4 ?

I tend to use their recommended method... when I have not, though, I did an
install of Ubuntu years ago and, I think, and update and then tried to use a
GUI wrapper of cron. It would not work. It was actually one of the things
that brought me to COLA, asking what could be going wrong. At the time,
years ago, I did not have much experience with Linux. Have seen other
oddities like this and, yes, I just back up any needed data and install the
newest version.

Of course, much of the herd insisted it had to be the user... but I
eventually did a full re-install of the then-current distro and it worked
fine.

Slow as defined by what exactly? The term "slow" in isolation really has
   no meaning.

Besides, an apt update can proceed while you are still using the system.
If it takes a long time, then it's probably not really a problem relative
to something like a Windows or MacOS update.

    "depending on your modifications"

This means that you have a setup quite unlike your average mundane Windows
or MacOS user. This point is largely irrelevant to the "ease of use" crowd.

This is just basic professional risk management.

It applies to ANYTHING. It's not just a Linux thing.

    The point is also irrelevant.

It's truth or falsity really doesn't matter. He's just trying to take
advantage of the transparency of Linux where you get the straight poop and
you totally get to see how the sausage is made.

Things like "Back it up first" are just basic industry practice.

No, it's a virus!

AFAIC it would only need one boot, right off the machine it was
installed on.

Linux - for IQs greater than 2000

Without open source projects like Apache, Nginx, OpenSSL, OpenSSH and others
(to say nothing of GNU/Linux, which does get some attention), the latest hot
new thing would likely not exist. More fundamentally, the web as we know it
would not exist.

There is a kind of myth that has grown around this lack of attention. It's the
myth of the lone developer creating powerful magic. It's a myth the open-source
community likes to tell itself: that open source software is created by
individuals working on labours of love in their spare time.

However, the myth ignores the fact that much of the money going into open source
software is directly and indirectly (in the form of employing developers who
contribute to open source projects) coming from corporations.

So much for tagging it "hobbyware".

You know it's true. You're one of them:

Oh believe me that wasn't a lie. I have nothing but contempt for Apple.
And I haven't been here for 20 plus years. I've been here for a month
give or take.

I respect Apple's focus on environmental and human rights issues, though I
also realize they are a huge corporation where these things are FAR from
perfect. And I like a large number of their products... and dislike others.

It feels like you've been here for 20 plus years, since you spew a novel
every time you post.

heh!

I ask for a 3-line "percent breakdown of your estimated lifetime
earnings by OS" and I get 43 lines of Novotny spewage.

But... I do read a good percent of your posts. They're mostly interesting.

I skim through a few of yours. You let your inferiority complex get the
best of you.

As an aside, I don't care what you ask for. You'll get the answer I want
to give or none at all.

Quit babbling that you 'don't care'. You do care.

You're so /tough/, sailor.
