Clean the stray marks and borders from an image like this one, and
vertically align the data in the center of the page.

Can it be done programmatically?

No answer here, so I take it that wasn't done with stroke of a key?

Looks nice - your Photoshop skillz are mad.

Now multiply whatever effort that required by 1118 pages.

LOL! You're gonna have to settle for a little nicer looking
one:

(I added a little 'lighter' image)

I figured you had a ton, trying to prompt Feeb into action.

I did one in MS Paint. Fun!

What did you use? How long did it take?

Can you see that your 2nd image is a little over-rotated?

> I figured you had a ton, trying to prompt Feeb into action.

A whole .pdf's worth.

Feeb changed the background color of a .jpg, but finding those random
collections of black pixels and differentiating them from, say, a page
number, is probably much more challenging.

Under 5 minutes. If I were doing a lot I could probably get it
down to a couple of minutes.

I think it's an optical illusion ;)

As in 'not doable'.

Maybe, maybe not.

In a fit of Snit you clipped the 2nd pic. Why?

Feeb and owl offered up some solutions - I'll try them later.

Because it actually had a slight rotation issue and wasn't
centered as well (and the dark text against those dark
backgrounds didn't show up as well).

Neither of them address the stray mark issue. If you have
access to the original I'd rescan. If not, it'd take you about
a work week's worth of hours with MS paint I'd imagine (to
get rid of the stray marks, that is). I tried some layering with
different blend modes on channels to see if that might do
the trick but I don't think it'd satisfactorily remove 'em. Do
all those pages have issues to that same degree (even
the text pages)?

"And in next weeks lesson we shall discuss image rotation!"
...
And when the bulb turns on Steve Carroll shall slap himself on the
forehead. :)"

1) Who said [something very close to ] it?
2) In what famous thread?

Every page I looked at, some to a high degree. Did I say it was 1120
pages (less front and back cover, which aren't too bad)?

A fair number of pages have sections like this:

If I'm not mistaken, that's Crackhead's DW course. WTF
is it doing in my FB feed? Someone I know apparently
'liked' Udemy. Can it be that people are actually buying
that crap?!

It will show you courses you have visited — esp if you have repeatedly.

No problem. The 3rd ed. seems to be some kind of pseudo-black-market
Indian production, with errors galore, so I wouldn't bother hunting that
one down.

The 3rd Edition I have is the real USA/North America version, but how it
got so mangled is beyond me. It's not down to dirty scanner glass or
anything, 'cause the stray marks are all over the place and different on
every page.

The Global Edition would be noted on the Title Page or Copyright page,
and has the errors you refer to.

Ah. OK. The hardcover seems to be the right one. Why not just buy
it and spare yourself the misery of reading it on a computer?

Yeah, reading a book on a computer can be painful, but the easy
navigation and cut-paste somewhat makes up for it.

As for buying: the cheapest used hardcover US Edition from Amazon is
$120, for Very Good condition. New hardcover $150. So it's fairly pricey.

New softcover is avail for around $22, but all of them are the Global
Edition (which doesn't bother me, except many people say the print
quality is low, sometimes tilted, and the book physically falls apart.
And the errors).

I might buy electronic access (6 months for $34) and just for fun try to
crack the DRM of the VitalSource .vbk file.

https://www.vitalsource.com/products/computer-systems-a-programmer-39-s-perspective-randal-e-bryant-david-r-v9780134092997

I found some funny cat and mouse threads where people have hacked and
removed DRM from .vbk, but VitalSource comes right back with new DRM
measures.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/comments/7hxjgz/cracking_vitalsource_format_vbk_drm/

One thing I found that DRM makers do is somehow limit printing to PDF to
one or ten pages at a time.

Here's what the 3rd Edition .pdf should look like:

I transfer to them to iPad and read them inverted (white text on
black background), works pretty well.

Do you know if anything vital has been added to the 3rd edition?
