They switched to Linux from Solaris in what was clearly an obvious migration. For them to go from there to Windows highlights a serious lack in the open-source software. >> Nobody ever got fired for spec'ing Windows on the desktop. > > To hear Feeb tell it "Commercial software has only ONE advantage" > and "No counterargument is possible". Asking the average user to use the CLI shouldn't be a that difficult but I agree with you that once a typical user is faced with the prospect of typing in a command rather than clicking somewhere, they get scared to death. -- SilverSlimer Free software advocate Minds: @silverslimer

Given that the desktop itself has largely been replaced by 'web efforts' where the average user is concerned, it seems obvious that asking them to use a CLI is more difficult than many are willing to admit. We, here... in COLA, are very far removed from the average user, we tend to forget that.

Any time Windows needs a fix, you're instructed to use the CLI. So this is a bullshit argument, as modern Linux distributions don't require the CLI either (for day to day work). Personally I like the CLI, but I used it in Windows as well (ran DOS programs where I could). -- The more I see of Windows, the more I like Linux.

As for LibreOffice, in my opinion it's superior to Microshit Office. (Of course, that's not setting the bar very high.) -- The more I see of Windows, the more I like Linux.

I think intuitiveness is often overrated. Wordstar was about as intuitive as nothing, but once you learned how to use it, it was extremely fast and efficient. That said, I was able to learn Claws pretty quickly. There is another thing about "intuitivety" (if that's a word) ... what it usually really means is that the software is like something you already use and have learned (not intuited) in the past. >> As for LibreOffice, in my opinion it's superior to Microshit Office. (Of >> course, that's not setting the bar very high.) > > I don't think it's better, but I like it more too. I found out that (for Windows machines) Lotus SmartSuite 9.8.1 is available on Archive.org (the TuCows archive subdivision of the site) as freeware/abandonware. This version has the fixes so it will work on Windows 10 and down. I liked Lotus WordPro a lot. I might even see if it will run under Wine. Also includes 1-2-3, Organizer, Approach (maybe a couple other applications – I just used WordPro). -- The more I see of Windows, the more I like Linux.

I agree that it is likely linked to a past software experience but the reality is that Claws, for the most part, is completely outdated as well. Even if it managed to cater to the people looking for some simplicity, it is sorely lacking features that people expect to have in their mail client. The omission of HTML, in this day and age, is ridiculous. >>> As for LibreOffice, in my opinion it's superior to Microshit Office. I completely expect such behaviour from corporations. Still, it's not something I'm likely to every try out. LibreOffice does the job for me just fine. -- SilverSlimer Free software advocate Minds: @silverslimer
