I just gave Google Docs a try, and have confirmed that there is no problem saving your files either locally to the Chromebook, or to a USB drive. When ChromeOS was new, there was a lot of FUD spread-about, that Google would "own" your documents. A word-processing document can be downloaded and saved as docx, odt, rtf, pdf, txt, html, or epub. Nice! Zero interest in Google Docs myself (I don't even like the Interface). But if you like the interface and features and remember to backup your work, then I guess you've got what you want. Still, Google can go through your docs and I believe I do remember that – originally – you couldn't work offline, not sure about saving locally. -- The more I see of Windows, the more I like Linux.

Good question. I would say that they want people to log on to docs.google.com first to know who its users are, they then want people to get hooked to the product so that they can make suddenly change the terms of its use. Hence why there are so many socialists. > GNU/Linux, however, due to its requisite for technical expertise, > will exclude brain-dead idiots. At least this WAS true until the junk > distros like Ubuntu, Mint, etc. began to cater to the idiot crowd. A lot of people want freedom but don't want to feel as though they constantly need to work for it. Clearly, RMS and other extremists would want people to take complete control of their machine and demand that every aspect of it be free including the BIOS. I actually agree that this is something everyone should strive for which is why I often agree with what you post. However, it will only come if those supportive of freedom also use their wallet to encourage the manufacturers who respect it. As such, machines bundled with Windows should be avoided in favour of machines which come without. Also, Linux supporters should consider looking for machines that use hardware for which all support is available in free form. Ideally, this would include a BIOS for which the software is also free. Here's the best resource I can find for that: <https://www.fsf.org/ resources/hw/endorsement/respects-your-freedom> -- SilverSlimer Ubuntu 18.04 on MSI GT72 2QD Proudly blocking Facebook and Youtube

Agreed but I believe that Wayland is definitely a step in the right direction regardless of some resistance. X does the job but not as well as every other GUI. That hardly matters to some whereas it is essential for others. Choice allows for Wayland to at least be an option. > Linux and GNU software are beautiful creations, but the meddling of > these wannabe dictators like RedHat/Poettering and freedesktop.org > introject ugliness and instability. He's an extremist as it relates to most Linux users. However, I agree with you that it is probably not the best word considering what connotations come with it. He _is_ reasonable, the way that I see it and his objectives are definitely the kinds that all computer users should aim for as well. However, getting to where he wants to go, for the time being, requires significant sacrifices for some users and as such, they see him as somewhat of a polarizing figure. >> As such, machines bundled with Windows should be avoided in favour of >> machines which come without. >> >> > The difference between MS Windows now and MS Windows just a few years > ago is so stark and outrageous that it's a wonder anybody still uses MS > software. > > But they do, and this calls into question the mental integrity of these > vast hordes of computer users. I always tried to give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt but it's seriously hard to do so nowadays. For one, there is no excusing their involvement with PRISM. There is also no excusing the bombardment of ads built into the software Windows bundles which was traditional devoid of it. It's also hard to excuse their constant suggestion that people should use Edge and the fact that any link clicked on in Mail uses Edge regardless of the default. It's difficult to sympathize with their need to spy on users and the fact that they force updates which make the system unusable for a period of time. There is no excuse for the operating system keeping a driver you _removed_ in the manner they suggest and using it after a restart (RonB experienced this too) and finally, there is no excuse for the software breaking when it was installed, used and uninstalled exactly as they recommended. All of the above are the reasons I had to migrate away once and for all. >> Ideally, this would include a BIOS for which the software is also free. >> >> > https://www.coreboot.org/ > https://libreboot.org https://www.openfirmware.info/Welcome_to_OpenBIOS > > Of course, superior router firmware is available ONLY as open source: > > https://dd-wrt.com I will likely look into a fully-free laptop to replace this one in the future. -- SilverSlimer Ubuntu 18.04 on MSI GT72 2QD Proudly blocking Facebook and Youtube

Enough already. You're again trying to pretend you are something you are not. You're the court jester and your many brainless posts show this. Think about it, who knows the DOM API, is a web developer, has stolen Snit (a real advocate)'s account, has passion for this shit and is a huge conniption-fit throwing man-child who, when he is quoted lying, posts all kinds of ridiculous crap even when he's *not* flooding... AND... who tries to pin everything he is doing on "advocates" and has for years? It is easy to twist facts by focusing on a handful of exceptions different from what is common. What holds more weight from an advocacy standpoint are the expected operations. He'd have to be suffering from a form of insanity to be unsure of whether or not he "never had" worked with a program with Snit (a real advocate). Gee, who could it be? When a guy can not be consistent with his story and applies dishonest, self-image saving lies later, it's rather obvious what his tactic is. Really, those of you who troll are not able to control Unity anymore. Vallor's posts are totally entirely duplicitous. There can be no question that as soon as any recent 'plonked person' does something to confuse the inferior namby-pamby's feelings that they will be reblocked. They cannot use reason to show the message to be wrong so they try to feel somehow superior by attacking the messenger. They cling to their attacks and ignore the message time and time again. <https://youtu.be/H4NW-Cqh308>

You have nobody but Steven 'The Shill' Carroll to credit for that. Time to blame Steven 'The Shill' Carroll! If you have 'a.doc' open in a user space program such as gedit and you want to change its name to 'c.pdf' via a bash script, Klaus Schadenfreude's suggestion might be of value, if only to make sure file names are not the same. It was Steven 'The Shill' Carroll who was publicly asking how better to obscure his trolling. Did he think that was clever? Klaus Schadenfreude baited Steven 'The Shill' Carroll as much as he deserves, big fscking deal. Why be a blubbering asshole about it? Klaus Schadenfreude's computer has more cores than Steven 'The Shill' Carroll's. Klaus Schadenfreude wins. Steven 'The Shill' Carroll loses. Which gives Klaus Schadenfreude better productivity, efficiency, and error-reduction. I suppose that a 1080P display could always be zoomed for preference, so is undeniably superior. To me, 1366x768 looks plenty fine-pitch,but those with eagle-eyes might find it a bit grainy. -- "Of course, the irony is that you're jealous of merely something that you _believe_ may be true ... you've jumped to that conclusion all on your own, along with how you've been intimidated by it." - "-hh", channeling "Snit"
