Heck, this morning *I* posted an image to FB that way... wanted to show
something on a website so I took an image on my iPod Touch (the lowest
end iOS device you can get, with the smallest screen, etc.) and was able
to edit it (just crop in this case) and post it, along with the URL to
the actual site and some comments. I do not do that often from iOS but
it is not at all hard.
But, sure, there are many people who do not do much more with their
computers / phones than use FB, play some games, and surf the web. Of
course there are those who do a lot more, too.

I think many in COLA are overly sensitive and tie themselves to an OS /
computing environment in ways I do not really get. Say I loathed
LibreOffice. So what? Say you loathed Pages? So what? But many in here
seem to take personal offense that I do not like KDE (though I have
repeatedly given it a chance and do appreciate how it is improving).
Look at Slimer or whatever name he is going by this week. He loathes
macOS and Macs in general. Does not offend me one bit.
And then look at the EzeeLinux community
(<https://www.facebook.com/EzeeLinux>). I do not comment there a whole
lot, but I have repeatedly talked about places where I see room for
improvement in Linux. The reaction there is mostly people liking my
comments and sometimes asking me for more examples and what I would
prefer or what I see elsewhere. There might be some example of someone
being offended but I cannot think of an example off hand.

There are certainly things about the macOS environment I do not like...
the window snapping feature was one.

I meant in my message, but, yes, my .sig is based mostly on responses in
this group. Read Slimer's comments for great examples. He knows he
cannot actually back his views and he loathes mine but cannot refute
them... so he just lashes out. RonB often does the same, too.
As I have said for years, COLA (and CSMA) are amazing places to watch
the psychology of people.

Who? When? Sandman over a decade ago? Are you still stuck on that? I
will not even pretend to remember the details, but it was something
about Sandman trolling me (I do not even recall on what... something
about web stuff I assume) and my responding by noting how he had some
weaknesses on his site -- no alt text on images, some bizarre HTML and
CSS errors, and things I cannot recall. Even at the time, though, I
noted it was not a big deal and made it clear he had skills I would
never have.
He took great offense at that and for over a decade tried to "prove" his
CSS was not faulty (for reasons I never understood that REALLY bothered
him) and attacked me endlessly. You, too. Over his CSS having some
errors I noted. It was bizarre.
> For the record, I started in on

And you made tons of bizarre claims about my views of Dreamweaver...
again, not digging back through old posts but you assumed that since I
taught a class on it and used it for some sites I must worship it and
think one needed the GUI portion and whatever. It was weird and obsessive.

I rarely KF people. I did you because of your actions outside of Usenet
that I shall not even go into. And I think you are responsible for your
own actions. Currently you are being on generally "good" behavior, but
of course I do not trust that to continue for long.

Not sure what you mean by "limited" to that. Of course I have other
views, but I do not have any which are contradictory to that.

Sorry for not being more specific. Meant Jeff-Relf's system. Would have
just said that but forgot his name. This video:
<https://youtu.be/2XlyaFPpQa4>
Covers far more than just search, but that is what I focused on more.
But that video helped me to understand his system and computing
workflows and the like better. I am not going to change to how he does
things, but I can still learn from it.

Studying Linux... forever a rookie. Why does Robert Wessel focus on Satan's ego so much? Satan and the advocates insist looking for guidance for an open source application is instigating. Sandman fabricates stories. Here is a list of names Jonas Eklundh has admitted he attributes to Robert Wessel "Cactus Pete", "Donald", "Donald Miller", "Horace McSwain", "Hymen", "meat", "Mike Weaver", "Modena IV Drid", "Omar Murad Asfour", "Rhino Plastee", "Soapy", "SopwithCamel", "Sunny Day", "Takuya Saitoh", "The Letter Q", "tmelmosfire", "zevon". Most of those are names of his buddy Steven Petruzzellis. Just look at your junk and look at Satan's, there is nothing for Satan to learn from a jerk like Robert Wessel. But so be it, let him keep making an ass of himself. It is not like anyone believes him. What is your evidence? By following 'teachers' like that you get moral imperatives like 'culture wars'. Carried to its (im)moral conclusion, the concept that it's 'insensitive' for a hetero normal guy to not wish to marry a transvestite is created. -- What Every Entrepreneur Must Know! https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.sys.mac.advocacy/RSikBcWxBLo https://youtu.be/OffkiSAsYo8 http://www.5z8.info/racist-raps_r6r3wf_best-russian-sites-for-bootleg-everything Jonas Eklundh

I get that he has skinned the browser. That part is not really of
interest to me (not putting him down for it but the look does not appeal
to me in the slightest). I was talking about his focus on being able to
do searches in multiple search engines.
<https://youtu.be/2XlyaFPpQa4?t=7m12s>
I can see the appeal of that.

Sure. And overall I like having just one text field there... I like
keeping things fairly "clean" looking (though more graphical than he does).

The right. But I like the compactness of what you have on the left, so I
just added that with "ytg cheese". That one does what I assume you are
doing:
site:youtube.com cheese
Curious, and tooting my own horn here, what does it look like when you
do a YouTube search for "relational database"?
> I initially thought you were talking about searching that recipe site and

I use recipe.come more... but really I just do a Google search for
"recipe [whatever]" and use whatever site I want. If I wanted to add a
search for recipe.com or allrecipe.com I could. Nothing magical about
any of this... just am using OmniKey.

I'm wondering it you could make fetch calls from a MacOS action. Seems to me if you had node you could, and then you could make several to various sites with a query you passed. You could probably even bring the results up in one of the Apple message windows.

While I have used FF, I had not really played with that. It is a cool
feature, though not sure it is worth the screen real estate to me, nor
is it enough to have me change browsers... but I still appreciate his
pointing it out in the video and getting me to think about it.

What he uses, I think, does save some screen real estate but does not
appeal to me at all. I am pretty happy with the standard macOS theme
though I wish front windows stood out a bit more.

OK. I will have to play with that and see which I end up using more. I
might even set "yt cheese" to do that one for a few days just to see if
I end up preferring it.

I know I mentioned it to you but did not see your reply... was pretty
sure it was the top spot from other places (used the VPN I got when
talking to Marek) but did it was possible YouTube was using cookies or
something to track search hits. Did not try with multiple browsers or
the like.
Some of it is to toot my own horn, no doubt, but it is also because I
only saw this a short time ago and was surprised. My video is certainly
decent, but I did not expect that. It is not as though that is an
uncommon term.

Wait... looks like it is allrecipes I was thinking of. As I said, I just
do a Google search and click links that look interesting. But I
recognize the look of that site and generally find I like their stuff
(with my own modifications). Looking through the ones I have saved I
have ones from quite a few sites, though.
Hmmm, I wonder if there is a way to automate downloading a bunch of the
allrecipes recipes at once. :)

I do have a services that lets me do image searches on Google Image,
Bing Image, and TinEye all at once. I did not make it... it is an
extension called "BackTrack"
<http://sidetree.com/extensions.html>
One thing that drives me crazy about Safari is if you do a search for
something and then try to copy the URL you end up with just the search
terms (only on Google... have read this is a Google "feature" that
Safari supports but I hate it). At one point I had an extension that
turned that "feature" off, but cannot remember what it was.

Having the title you did is probably the biggest reason (SEO really
does work) That... and your video has been around for a bit; when
coupled with the title, whether people actually watch it, or not, it
will have gotten a larger share of the clicks (but the title was huge).

While my purpose in showing it like I did was based on not using the
API they make available (I don't think it's free), using one is easier:
fetch('https://api.github.com/users/octacat').then(res => res.json()).then(res => console.log(res));
(works in a browser)
You can always scrape, and you don't need a backend app to do it,
but it gets tedious... and there is a ton of stuff out there via API:

Nothing... but muscle memory has me typing just "yt <whatever>". So I
set what you suggested to "yt" and the actual YouTube search to "ytt"...
the extra t does not stand for anything but is easy to type and remember. :)

Also helps that multiple schools found it and added it to their
curriculum. That makes sense: Many online schools do not let adjuncts
alter the courses much, but you can add materials if you find parts
lacking. I made that for a class I was teaching. It helped my students a
lot and apparently works for other classes, too. It is meant as a very
basic intro to the topic... and I have had multiple instructors contact
me telling me it has made a difference in their classes.

I was, of course, just kidding. I rarely if ever want all recipes from a
group or whatever, I want a specific recipe for whatever ingredients I
have in the house or whatever I get a hankering for. And then I modify
it anyway. :)

I knew it was a joke... I'm just trying to find out where the line is for
you between tech 'talk' and 'action'. You've often claimed how you're
"curious" about this or that, but, for the most part, never enough to
do things for yourself unless it falls within what you already know.
Maybe that's why you don't understand what you admitted to
yesterday regarding some users' love of Linux?

I have no issue with people preferring Linux... my issue is with
dishonest advocacy. That, of course, applies to ANY system... I do not
back dishonest advocacy of Windows or macOS, either.
You (and Owl) are far more focused on scripting / programming than I am.
I am more focused on efficient workflows using, mostly, low end tools
and what the general user can do. I take great joy out of seeing an 80+
year old be able to take photos and edit them and share them with their
grandchildren, or seeing them be able to do research on health issues.
This applies, of course, not just to 80 year olds but the mass of people
who use tech but do not care to study it really. I love when high school
students figure out how to do better searches, for example, or when they
realize they can make their own budget (earlier today was helping
troubleshoot a very simple spreadsheet where someone was tracking their
money to better understand where it all goes).
I like to use simple things well. This does NOT mean I think the more
advanced programming and scripting is bad... not at all.

When the things being compared are often subjective and the
topic is advocacy, who gets to define what "dishonest advocacy"
is? Advocacy isn't always pushing something that's 'better' than
something else, there are lots of reason for it that have nothing
to do with that.

The person you are responding to is in my kill file. I just configured a kill filter and won't be bothered by the posts. Barry Margolin's crap has made a veritable mess of usenet via Google Groups, so I don't make an attempt replying to other threads with my usenet reader anymore. One thing he has succeeded at with this behavior is that the Barry Margolin plonk has been shown to be the right choice. Barry Margolin is regularly seen posting "GOOGLE HAS NOTHING" when it comes to content on a site where information is there multiple times... but Barry Margolin is just too dim or lost to grasp any data he sees.

I have no issue with subjective views, either.

Sure.
You keep trying to imply I am doing something. Just next time you see it
note it.
What I see is you and others doing this dance around some comment you
find to be inappropriate but rarely quoting anything other than
something from ancient debates where it would take a week to go through
context. Not interested. But if you see me saying something about Linux
you think is unfair or whatever just note it. I am open to it.

I didn't imply anything, I flatly stated it:
"You're generally making antagonistic comparisons to things people don't care about."

So if and when I do so call me out. Not interested in your perception about some unnamed discussion where you think I did something you have not quoted. And, no, not interested in you pulling up some quote from some debate from a year or more ago where we can spend the next month debating the context only to come to no agreement. With all that said, I think you are referring to my comments about workflows and the like. Just had a friend leave my house who ran into another friend of mine, an aeronautical engineer who was in one of my classes -- he was apparently going on and on about how my class from years ago is helping him to this day with his work. Yesterday at Walmart I ran into another student from one of my intro classes from over a decade ago -- she wanted to tell my wife how much my one class changed her life and how she wants to take more classes from me. I get how to work with systems to be efficient and have the tool not get in the way... but it can be hard to understand in text. It is one of the reasons I often make videos to show it. -- Personal attacks from those who troll show their own insecurity. As to the quoting, virtually everyone has done it. You know this. > With all that said, I think you are referring to my comments about > workflows and the like. I'm referring to your entire history in COLA (and CSMA). I suggest you stick to talking about tech instead of your usenet history.
