Those arcades aren't anything recently constructed either...IIRC 15th Century? And while it is easy going down the one side (to the bear pen), the return walk can be a bit of a climb (uphill). BTW, "Restaurant Anker" (on Kornhausplatz 16, right by the Zytglogge fountain) has a nice variety of Rösti, although its reviews have gotten ding'ed for not being all that friendly to english speaking tourist types. Eaten there twice; I'd go back again. -hh

They're similar, but the main difference (besides that they're twice-cooked) is that they're served with a variety of ways, so it's more of a lunch or dinner than breakfast. One variant is with s big old würst and brown gravy. Another is with ham & cheese. Yet another is an egg on top with pickled onions & sweet pickles. Somewhat similarly, in Paris, one can find savory filled crepes instead of just the sugary sweet ones we find in the USA (although they have those too). > Did you do any mountain hikes? How about the LHC? Haven't been to the collider ever; have done some hiking on some trips, although Bern isn't particularly close to the mountains...or lakes. Did try to slip another visit back to Bern in as a short side trip stop two years ago to see their Christmas Markets (actually, for lunch at Restaurant Anker :-) when traveling from Montreux to Zurich by train...but it was a long enough day without the stop, as wanted also to see what Zurich's Christmas Markets were like & a few other stops (FWIW, I wasn't particularly impressed with Zurich's Christmas Markets in comparison to other cities). -hh

FWIW, the church wasn't open while I had time in Bern, but its outside façade
was quite decorative...here's an old/small pic from the P&S I was using at the
time when on non-photo trips:

Insofar as the hiking, one of the proverbial meccas is the Grindelwald Valley
region, and one of the nice (& less hard) ways to enjoy that area is to use the
gondolas to then be able to do a higher elevation traverse, with huge views
across the valley such as the North Face of the Eiger. This pic isn't of the
Eiger ("ogre") proper, nor the Monk or Jungfrau ("maiden"), but rather a
'non-famous' (to tourists) peak to the east (left)...and this is while will riding
the First gondola up (hence, the foreground interest):
<http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2009/2009-CH_2673.jpg>
Of course, there's plenty of killer stuff in the whole region; here's a pic
from Germany, looking (generally) towards Salzburg Austria:
<http://www.huntzinger.com//photo/2010/germany/BWB-Oberjettenberg-2010-2.jpg>
As well as the nearby Konigssee:
<http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2007/germany/konigssee_st_bartholomew5968.jpg>
<http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2007/germany/konigssee_st_bartholomew5977.jpg>
And of course, all of this talking is just reminding me that its been nearly a year
since I've been back to the Continent, so its really time to think about another trip
again; way overdue to get back to Normandy;
<http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2004/france/Normandy_cem1.jpg>
<http://www.huntzinger.com/photo/2004/france/airborne_glass.jpg>
...particularly as I couldn't squeeze it in during the 70th D-Day anniversary last
year; an old buddy has been talking about visiting some WW-I sights, and the
100th anniversaries of these are occurring 'right now' through 2018.

I am hoping for another Conservative victory in Canada to ensure that only very limited amounts of these sand rats make their way into the country, and only those who won't rely on our welfare system to survive. And you've spent more than a decade talking about how they're k00ks, *fsckwits* or other things TO NO AVAIL. They haven't changed as a result of your complaints and don't look like they ever will. How about you stop wasting your energy calling everyone names and just go on with your life? Look back at how long you've been here and how many posts you've made about how bad everyone else is and then decide whether you want to continue doing so until your last breath. -- A.M
